"Please launch the game via the Steam client."
For some reason I'm getting this error whenever I try to open the game... but I am launching it from Steam. I do not intend to launch the game through anything else. Is there a workaround for this?

Same problem. can't find a solution yet...
It looks like some protection from mods but I don't use any.
maybe I should ?

Not sure where you got that info, as not only is this not a universal problem, but also the game is terribly easy to mod in fact.

If you haven't restarted since installing, I'd start there. I've had a lot of games on Steam not behave until I restarted my whole computer, even if most of the time it doesn't make sense.

If that still doesn't work the next thing I'd try is running Steam as Admin so it forces itself onto the game. I don't recommend always running Steam as Admin, but it's okay if it's absolutely needed. You would be masking an underlying conflict by using it in this case though so if Steam Admin mode does work I'd run a Take Ownership command (you can find a reg entry to add this to your right click menu on the interwebz. I can link you if you REALLY need it) on the folder the game is installed to and try again with Steam not in Admin mode.

If neither restarting nor Steam Admin mode work, then we have to discuss what you have running in the background

Thank you for replying.

I just assumed to be the case, because I've heard other people having the same issue while trying to mod the game (and lauching it through a 3rd party software).
it's probably completely different.

First thing I did, but it didn't help.

I'll try that, I'm skeptical, but I might get suprised.

I keep my background as clean as I can.
MSI Afturburner was the first to go when I couldn't run the game.
I still have the Nvidia helper, team viewer and Asus Ai suite for monitoring, but that's all...
I'll have a look in the services, just in case.

anyway, thank you for helping.

Ah, I also checked the .exe to not be run as admin (something found in another post) but that's not the culprit...

Sadly, this makes no change to my case :(

Update: I reinstalled my system, from Win 10 to Win 11. Finally it works!

None of the above worked for me. What I discovered was that a Conan Exiles server I was running in the background was causing FF7 to think that I was not launching the game through steam. I have the server launch on computer start up, I guess the reason restarting my computer *sometimes* worked was that if I launched FF7 quickly enough on boot, it would start before the conan server and be ok. So I guess, make sure you aren't running any other steam processes in the background. It's frustrating as the server had never caused any issues before. Once I killed the conan server I was able to launch the game finally.

I run a dedicated server for Palworld. I could not launch FF7 Rebirth and play until I shut down the dedicated server. IMO this is an issue that Steam should look into and fix.
