HDR or SDR?

Im just curious to which one of these is better?
SDR looks more colorful and HDR looks more blah. So i dont really understand the difference.
Which one of these is better and why? If someone could answer a noob like me

Guys I would like to point out only very few monitors display HDR colors correctly most of them makes the colors look very washed out HDR on Pc monitors still very finnicky I've owned 3 different ones in the past all the same switch to OLED and never going back, but your best option is to turn up Digital Vibrance if you are on Nvidia and if AMD I think it's called plain ol "Saturation" turn those up when using HDR it will look much better.

Also like to point out HDR400 brightness has nothing to do with colors looking washed out, the peak nits of a monitor has almost nothing to do with 10bit Color Reproduction.

I have the G7 Qled and HDR is awful on that as well due to it only having 8 or 10 local dimming zones. You need hundreds of zones minimum to be remotely worthwhile for HDR on a non Oled display. Not to mention that Samsung always have QA issues with the Odyssey lineup the og G7s were plagued with issues, the Neo G9 didn't have working HDR for a good while. Scan lines, flickering, etc, etc.

This game super washes out with HDR on with my original G7. I mean it's literally turning everything white. It doesn't do that with any other game with HDR. Also when I alt-tab or exit. Windows is just as washed out as the game til I turn HDR off. This is the only game that does that.

Kinda depends. I got my PC hooked up to 2 monitors and my smart TV. My smartTV has hdr, but because I run it on gaming mode ingame HDRs look kinda bad unless I manually tweak the settings. So for this game I use the pseudo hdr function from my TV, since it's less effort.

It could be your hdmi black level is wrong make sure black level is set to auto on your tv then from your pc if you are using 422 or 420 make sure your black level is set to limited in your nvidia control panel or amd adrenalin if you are using 444 make sure it's set to full also make sure your color depth is set to 10 bpc

You have to enable HDR in Windows. The game won't toggle on the display's HDR mode automatically, so if you don't have HDR enabled in Windows then it looks super washed out. I'm on an LG CX and the game looks phenomenal in HDR.

HDR also doesn't work properly if you're forcing DX11, you have to use DX12 or it's going to look washed out no matter what you do.

I have a 27" Odyssey G7. Game looks fantastic in HDR.

I have a 1000 nits, 4K, 144hz monitor and I still chose SDR only coz I take lots of screenshots and video captures. Game looks better and more vibrant in HDR but when you take screenshots or video captures it appears washed out. Playing it on SDR on a decent monitor is not that bad.

What i figured out was that it was a wrong cable from the monitor to the pc.
Normally used a HDMI,but that limited monitor in HDR and refresh rate to 144hz, I forgot that the monitor came with a displayport cable. I used that and now HDR doesnt look like crap and i can get 244hz refreshrate.
So yeah!, im an idiot

Yep this solved the issue for me. I remember researching performance tips for this game and one of them was forcing DX11, so anyone who made this change and then tried HDR will probably experience this issue. Hopefully this helps someone trying to do desperate research like me lol
