I mean, most boss fights, and even some normal encounters, I would use assess. But I never came across an encounter where I would assess and then have to restart and change my build to be capable of winning. After using assess, I would always be able to complete the fight with my current configuration of materia and using some tact.
I just don't see how your setups or materia configurations could be so bad that you are having to restart every fight to make adjustments after you see the information from using assess.
If people have problems they should consider that others do play on Hard successfully, so there obviously must be ways to do it. No shame in asking for hints if you do not want to toy around so much until you have a plan or just cannot find a good strategy, but it's pointless to blame the game for problems it offers solutions to.
@salty: I could see people not really having to restart but doing so because they simply want to use the best strategy, for instance equip fire when there's an enemy weak to it. It's not much of a problem in this game, but if the sequel offers more complex materia combinations instead of starting back at zero I think they should add the option to save a few equipment layouts per character so you can have some prepared and switch more easily to adapt to different situations.
