I'm like you it feels expensive still considering how long its been out. I just bought it on sale but I'm gonna refund it and wait to see if they release the 2 as a bundle. Already played it twice on Ps5 anyway.
First they took the money for PS exclusive
Then it sold really well
Then they did a terrible cheap rushed pc port
they took money for the EGS exclusive
then it comes to Steam without a single fix to this horrendous port
and now its a 4 year old game and at its cheapest its £35.
Its a good game but damn
Even Dead Island 2 is 33 with 50% off after being on epic first.
Rebirth is one of the top selling PS5 games.
In the US anyway, the $70 price point is standard for triple A games.
Been over this multiple times in multiple threads on multiple forums; that is a misleading comparison, physical sales only between when that was the only option and now, where digital sales are prevalent and with different consoles with different install bases. XVI is the closest in terms of context it was released in, and while it performed better, it wasn't night and day, and that was a commercial success.
Those are physical sales as Weltall said. Further, we don't know what they've sold. A few sources have claimed some estimations but they're false. Ampere's claim is based on the demo and not the actual released game with a horrible estimation. The other guy, Daniel I think it was, is from a business in China that exclusively studies the Chinese market and was claiming global sales figures, despite as pointed out... his company only handling the Chinese and not global market analysis. Plus, Daniel is known to lie/make up stuff.
The reality is we don't know what the sales are.
The additional reality is this could be seen as no groundbreaking figures considering Square Enix is relatively silent and not parading sales success, but at the same time Square Enix' announcement of sales figures for both good and bad has been completely bizarre in its handling since around early Covid pandemic so this doesn't necessarily mean it is bad. Further, the game is leading charts at least monthly in Japan (which admittedly doesn't tell us a lot).
Worth pointing out is the PS5 has a far smaller install base but the game basically required more powerful hardware so PS4 simply wasn't an option. As PS5 install base grows the percentage of owners who enjoy JRPGs will also grow. Further, the Remake series caries stronger than normal long-term sales because each game reinforces interest in the other episodes to some degree.
It doesn't help that aside from FF14's unusual turn around success the last several Final Fantasy entries have been relatively lukewarm (not bad but kind of middling enough to leave people hesitant to buy day 1) which has likely impacted launch based sales but may not cause issues for long term sales, hopefully.
Hopefully the eventual PC release will also spark notable interest, especially as even the PS5 version is still somewhat stunted by hardware limitations... assuming the PC port is of better quality this time around let us hope.
