It absolutely isn't isn't the same story.
I suppose that's all that matters. I would have liked more FF7, less Kingdom Hearts.
I mean this is a rather poor example, as the new god of war games are sequels and a continuation of the story. Though the two latest games where done in a way that you don't need to play the previous games, as they new they needed to dramatically increase there potential player base to justify how much the games are now costing to make.
I would say the ratchet and clank or dead space remakes are the closest examples we have of this.
