Everyone in here is talking about Rebirth so much I forgot its a forum for part 1
I'm loving the game so far. I'm taking my time to go through each area completing the quests. I'm not assessing everything as I go just the enemies that feel tough so I can see the weakness. There's a lot of content in this game I'm 15 hours in and haven't gone topside of Junon yet.
There's no real active defense or counterplay like you'd see in a real action game; it's just switching back and forth between block phase and attack phase, depending on what the boss is doing. The dodge button doesn't really do anything; it's just something you can spam to make the gameplay look more "actiony."
Block when the enemy is attacking; use stagger building attacks when the boss is done attacking and it's your turn; time your high damage ATB nukes for when the enemy is staggered. That's the gameplay loop.
I would say the real counterplay is switching between characters when an enemy attacks. I never actually use the block button when I see an incoming attack. I just switch characters and let the A.I. auto-block.
Yeah, XV combat is terrible. They sort of improved it with the later DLC, but it is still really bad. The later additions of like Armiger combos was...something...but, really very little to it. I guess Ignis had some kinda cool moves, but, too little, too late.
But, "the combat of FF XV > FFVII R Trilogy" (the best action combat in FF)? That is laughable.
The combat is pretty much the best compared to other FF games.
Most of the challenge comes from deciphering what actually happens on screen. But the actual combat system beneath it is fairly easy.
