Is this game good?
Idk anything about final fantasy, is this a good place to start the series? Should I even start the games? Is this a complete story or is it tied into the other 15 odd games?

The important thing to remember is each numbered Final Fantasy takes place in a different world with different characters. So you can start anywhere. However, the remake for FF7 is coming out in 3 parts, so this is not the whole story. Not sure if this game will click for people who are new to RPG's, but other popular titles are FF6, FF9, and FF10. The 3D remake for FF4 is also quite good. Maybe take a look at those titles and see if they pique your interest.

Not for new fans.

This is Part 1 of a 3-part sequel/reboot to FF7 that has only just released the second part on PS5. They really expect you to already know the original cause the game's story is about changing the timeline and events.

Its a twist sequel pretty much. "Remake"-ing the timeline.

But in terms of FF, as long as it only has a number and no subtitle, its probably safe to start with. Unless its FF12 where "Zodiac Age" just means its an enhanced rerelease.

Pick the one that looks the most appealing as long as it follows the rules above. My suggestion is 10 if you like turn based, but you're safe starting with a lot of them.

But if 7R's look is appealing, then go with the original 7 first since you'll get the full story without any of the twist sequel elements.

you might find it boring at times if you haven't played the original ff7. a lot of the enjoyment for me has been in seeing how they remake parts of the first game. theres a lot of filler to pad out the play time. but you might not like jrpgs in general if you dont like pointless filler content.

You absolutely do not have to play each game. Each game is a different story in a different universe. In fact, I think the only thing connecting them is Cid...maybe and your summons, attacks and basic things like that. Unless you are getting spin-off games, no game has the same story. 1-10 play differently than the rest. Think old-school RPG with turn-based game. FF7 was like that (original) but this remade version isn't.
I didnt like this while i had it on ps4 but once i got it on Steamdeck i got to love it. (probably because I could play anywhere and didnt have to wait for the ps4)

This was my first game in this series and I had a great time with it. Highly recommend! There is one or two things that won't make perfect sense since you (like me) will have context missing, but it didn't detract from the experience.

I am honestly shocked I got civil responses on steam forums, this helps a lot. I'll keep this up for others that are seeing this on sale and considering the purchase. I think I'll wait until I can get my steam deck and play the older games first, thanks!

As others have already mentioned, the FF games are independent of each other(with some exceptions), so you can start wherever you want. And some of the games are much better than others.
My personal favourite is FFX(X-2 on the other hand is the worst). FFVII, both original and remake are good, but the remake is unfinished, with only part 1 being on PC so far so you do hit a wall when you finish the first part.

They literally made this game so that newcomers can enjoy and understand the story. If you already played the original then yes you will pick up on little things that the devs put in for old players but they are not required to understand the game at all. You're just trying to make things deeper than they actually are here.

The devs have actually gone back and forth on this.

From saying that anyone can play this first, to then recommending the Original and saying how it should be played first, to then saying the opposite again.

They even claimed you could play Rebirth (Part 2) before Remake (Part 1).

So I wouldn’t go with what devs are saying

My take is you can skip Remake and go right into Rebirth for a better experience in nearly every way. If you want to play Final Fantasy you could start at any numbered title really. Some swear by 7, some by 6 and then the cults get smaller as you go into 8, 9 and 10 etc.

I doubt it. It makes no sense for them to design a game in a way that requires you to play a 30 year old game first before you can enjoy it.

Its Square Enix.

Its really not out of character. They've done it before with long running Kingdom Hearts 3, where you HAVE to play every prior game to understand everything.

And in a similar way, the name of the game "lies" to you. Since with KH3 its not actually the third game, but around the 9th (depending on how you count the mobile games). Although finding out about the other games is pretty easy and its not like they were hiding that they were relevant.

With 7R its much worse since they clearly called it Remake due to the extra $$$ they would get from those thinking it was a faithful, and full remake of the original. Before pulling the rug and revealing its Part 1 of a game that actively changes the story and makes it worse to create theory bait to promote future parts.

I mean, the game might make some sense on its own, but this game is playing off of the existence of the OG. This isn't really a straight/slightly expanded remake. This is a continuation of what happened before.

It's kinda like getting into Mobile Suit Gundam, if you start watching a newer series within the UC timeline, it can make a lot of sense internally and be perfectly watchable, but there are nods to or even full on continuity points that you'll totally miss. Like, my first entry into UC Gundam was 0083. The whole last five or so minutes, while it made sense to me, I didn't realize why all of that was sooooo significant. It basically set up Zeta Gundam and explained why the next (and partly, several other subsequent) wars happened. So, I couldn't appreciate what a big deal all of that was to the franchise. Just kind of an "okay, cool. That happens, I guess that is a conclusion." Then I watch Zeta and I'm like, "oooooooh, that's why they showed all of that."

0083 was made so it could be watched mostly as a self contained story to a newcomer, but still informs the greater franchise, with bigger payoff to returning fans.

Same deal here with FFVII. A lot of what is happening may or may not make sense, but its significance and how it fits into the story is almost certainly lost without that knowledge of the original.

Kingdom Hearts 1 wasn't released in the 90's, so no, SE hasn't done it before.

But Kingdom Hearts 3 is the third main entry in that series. The other games are spin-offs, like Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus were. So, no, SE didn't lie by calling it KH3.
