XIV and XV were some of the best selling FFs and they were not turn based.
Actually awarded... do you actually trust those? After all we've seen? really?
They're conflating Sony's having a lower marketshare with SE being unlikely. The fact of the matter is, PS isn't as hot in Japan as it used to be. So, less people have PS5s. Which invariably leads to lower FF sales when PS exclusive.
I would argue it's head canon to ignore clear trends, no matter what causes it. If the original FF7 sold 2 million units in Japan at launch and Rebirth sold 1/10 of that at launch, then the trend is clearly down. Nobody cares that it had a "strong" launch, relative to X, Y, or Z. The only comparison that matters is to the previous FF titles, and the numbers are objectively bad.
The PS5 selling poorly in Japan is no excuse for FF's decline. There are still 5 million PS5s in Japan, more than enough for that 2 million figure to be reached. This is about the decline in popularity for the franchise in Japan, not the decline of PS.
If one wants to understand the trends and what they mean, they do.
With the original FFVII everyone who bought the game had to buy a physical copy, so of course physical sales were high. When we see Rebirths Digital + Physical sales then we'll see how it did compared to the original FFVII.
There were 19 million PS1's sold in Japan, though, and only 5 million PS5s. So original FFVII has to outsell Rebirth 4:1 for it to be more popular in Japan.
Well, I'm not sure if YOU'RE trolling here, since we have had this discussion ad nauseam. I will not be drawn into another circular argument where we both repeat the same points over and over. I made my points about the digital sales a few pages back, you're welcome to re-read them again to refresh your memory.
Rebirth flopped in Japan, the sooner you accept that, the sooner we can all move forward to discussing how Square solves this problem.
Like I said, the franchise hasn't declined in Japan if the 2 best performing titles on the PS5 are both FF games.
Edit: The only thing you can argue is that Sony is failing to sell consoles in Japan. However, I suspect the digital sales are just way higher than the physical sales for Sony games now.
What are you talking about? FF and Dragon Quest were the two most well known RPG franchises in Japan during that time. How do you think the series even got to a 7th installment? Because no one knew about it or liked it?
FF7 was just the first FF to make it big overseas. Also, for its time, FF7 was the most expensive video game made yet, you think Square would be throwing that kind of money at a franchise that wasn't popular?
