But yes bosses are more spongy and dodge and attack is all you need for that first boss.
*You have no idea of what "spongy" means with just that bossfight.
Better weapons and better leveled weapons (also with more leveled char) help to deal with spongyness too (also the right materias too).
However, once I got further into the combat, things got a bit better. The biggest thing I suggest is to always have assess equipped, keep all the elements in your party, and switch characters when someone is better suited against a specific weakness than your chosen leader.
Once you're properly using weaknesses and tactical info the sponge stuff goes away. You might be caught off guard here and there unless you know what's coming, but it's not been anything too bad yet. Hell House was super spongey for me, but I think that's just because of how bad I am at the manual combat rather than the boss itself.
Basically, what I've found up until now is if something feels like a sponge, you don't have the right materia or haven't read their info properly.

I'd love to hear reasons why you think the combat is bad. Legit reasons, no stupid ♥♥♥♥ like the camera, cause it isn't.
But I doubt you can come up with any.
What their answer is "NO that's good because...."
They dont see any problems or issues; the statement "But I doubt you can come up with any" says it all.
You would rather die than agree what I would tell
But for a starter, I finished the game by 95% button mashing without a thought and felt nothing but boredom
Okay, let me unpack the "boredom" part for you.
You played it like a button masher and that has got to be the worst way to approach the combat in this game. It's kind of like playing the original God of War and only using square square triangle as your only combo. That's extremely boring because it lessens the depth of the combat system for the sake of simplicity.
You should have experimented with materia combinations, switched characters often, made use of abilities and equipment. Instead, you ruined your experience because of how you chose to play it. I mean, you have a three person team for a reason. This isn't intended to be a character action game. Use everyone to their fullest instead of just Cloud. I'd get incredibly bored of the combat playing it like that.
If you say something I actually agree with, I will agree. I'm not unreasonable.
You whine about fanboys, but you are acting exactly like a textbook example of a hater.
The majority of the combat complaints are exaggeration, misunderstanding, and/or outright lies about the systems.
Now hop on the real players roll. You will see if you will still button mash. The is the mod everyone need to use. The base game is way extremely too easy.
Giving enemies more health, more stats, and taking longer to stagger, does not, in fact, make a game better. It makes it more tedious. Time to kill is an important aspect of game design.
Also, most games are easy on the normal difficulty. That's why it's called "normal."
