Original 7 -> Crisis Core -> Remake -> Rebirth.
Remake is a sequel to the original, and it expects you to know the original well by the end of it.
Other than 7R being a meta lie about not being the same story, every FF game that just has a number next to it is standalone.
I've never been on the side of Remake being a sequel to the original FF7.
Doesn't follow the original story and instead goes for a multiverse "if you know the original, here's a fanfiction sequel/what if scenario where your favorite villain comes back with a new plan" sequel.
It's never been confirmed that Sephiroth already knows what happens since we don't even know if that's actually Sephiroth we see in Remake, as the real Sephiroth is at the northern crater the entire time.
I'm of the opinion that it's Jenova and the "Sephiroth" we keep seeing is another clone under Jenova's influence.
Or at least I think this is the best way to have the ''real'' experience.....
But obviously not many players today are gonna to return willingly to gameplay that is 25 years old or more.
We do have time travel influencing this story. OG happened and this is rewriting the events of the past with the future interfering.
It very well could be Sephiroth (perhaps from another time and/or dimension). Maybe it is Jenova. The two have a lot of overlap. But this is definitely in universe messing with time to alter the original events. This is a sequel.
I recommend new players play FF7: REMAKE first.
Esp since you can get it with REBIRTH for the price of REBIRTH.
The original Final Fantasy VII is just as good, or better with mods (For gameplay, and graphics). But, if you're not used to playing that type of game then it can be a bit harder for new players to get into.
Crisis core, while having a good story. Is not near as good as the other two. And is less relevant to the story in REMAKE than the Original Final Fantasy VII is.
All my opinion ofcourse.
I'll believe it's a sequel when Rebirth confirms it's a sequel. Until then, it's just pure speculation. I think there are going to be some huge reveals that make everything a lot more complicated and more interesting than "Sephiroth trying to rewrite history."
It's just one theory people have come up with to explain the Whispers and their presence in the story. I'm not convinced it's as simple as that.
So, what, you're "not convinced" that what happened... happened?
No. I'm not convinced that time travel or rewriting history is the end goal here. I am convinced that people have concocted this theory to make themselves feel better about what they think is going on.
If you watch the new trailer, there's a line about the black materia and "dreams" by some weird looking dude, and the trophy for the final chapter is called "confluence of worlds."
Confluence means "to merge," which Sephiroth has mentioned a few times in a few trailers. If you have convinced yourself it's merely about time travel and rewriting history, feel free, but that sounds far too simple to me and after Rebirth's story is analyzed, we can come to a conclusion then.
But I never have thought time travel for time travel's sake is the goal here. Rather, a means to an end.
