Serious question: how cringe is it?
How bad is the anime uwu oniichan stuff? Are the story and characters decent if you're not into jRPGs and childish anime tropes?

It isn't very anime cringe for the most part. Barrett, one of the main side characters, is a bit dramatic at times but this has to do with him fooling himself in part (something you wont fully appreciate until episode 2) while at least partially feigning justice.

Reno and Rude are a little cringe (minor side characters that show up a few times) but it isn't too bad.

Roche, a new character not in the original game, is totally cringe but he only has two showings in the main game (only one main showing) and his actions are clearly a product of putting on a show and not his fully underlying nature (hinted by his third extremely minor and entirely optional showing in the Yuffie DLC portion and also some of his background info).

Aerith has a playful, sometimes showy, nature but it isn't particularly cringe fortunately and pretty well done (but tastes will vary).

Wedge (the big rolly poly guy) will be hit or miss. Honestly, I think his character is fairly well done, personally, showing several facets of his situation in all this while also making him very human trying his best to keep up and be relevant to everyone, but he is a bit tropey.

Oh, I almost forgot Johnny. Johnny is 500% cringe, but fortunately he is a very minor reoccurring side character that shows up for very brief stints a few times in the game. He is designed entirely to be as cringe as humanly possible.

Beyond this there isn't much else to worry about. I mean, Madam M / Chocobo Sam / the femine dude who show up for one chapter may or may not qualify but you will understand better seeing it yourself (it isn't too bad, and it is brief too).

No anime stuff but the usual Japan tropes, shy cute girl, tough girl, tough guy, mysterious guy, goofy guy, etc.

The characters are very one-dimensional.

Someone doesn't know what they're talking about.
There is this Tifa, she is the typical anime girl trope for you. THere are a lot of anime tropes rly. Dressing up Cloud as a woman, typical Japanese woman service trope. etc
The ending is the typical anime twist. Trying to sound meta and smart, but coming off as juvenile and silly.

Especially compared to how the original knew exactly how to end, and the entire reason this game even exists. But apparently it’s story wasn’t good enough to just retell

The ending was cool. It took the original story and reinterpreted it in unexpected ways. Would have been boring if it was all just the same. Play the original instead in that case.

Yep. You said it, brother. The ending and the "whisper" crap is the single worst thing about this game. Anyone who is cheering on that sort of decision making is cheering on Square's descent into becoming the worst Japanese developer/publisher in the marketplace. Game coulda probably sold double or triple its sales if it had been a faithful retelling (like recent Mario RPG remake) rather than a self-indulgent fan-hating metanarrative that serves a niche interest base and primarily serves the whims and emotions of its aged writers.

Correct. This is one of the worst elements of the new writing. In the original, the characters were complicated, with tension between their internal interests and dialogues as well as tension between each other and the world around them. They had conflicting desires and thoughts and had to reconcile them. Nanaki with his conflicting feelings about his father Seto and learning the truth about him (such a beautiful side story), Tifa with her conflicting feelings about Cloud and the past, Cid and his, etc etc. and of course front and center is Cloud's complicated character and confusing past that slowly gets revealed through masterful storytelling.

What are the characters like in this game? They are one dimensinal tropes. The women unconditionally fawn over Cloud ostensibly to appeal to the same sort of sensibilities you will find in the "artwork" section. Aeris and Nanaki cease to be their characters by Chapter 16 and simply become empty robotic mouthpieces for the new whisper plot device.

They did this to the characters from Squaresoft's greatest accomplishment. It's like this game is a declaration announcing "FF7 is dead, Fans who want more of original FF7's story retold can take a hike, and what we are using the characters for now is anime trope milking and fanfare."

Barret is the realest ♥♥♥♥♥ ever in any videogame
I wish I could claim I am as funny as DonJon but alas no we are not the same person. I can definitely see how someone would want to think that though. I think I still have a lot more love for Square than he seems to--he seems pretty pissed off that this game wasn't turn based. I couldn't care less if this were turn based or action as long as the action was done properly. I don't like random battles or most turn based games anymore. So much wasted time between screens, selecting choices which mostly don't matter, etc. It's an outdated mechanic overall unless it's made more strategic like with FF Tactics. Trials of Mana is the pinnacle of action RPG party-based combat IMO and it is a great recent entry by Square. I replayed that game several times and did all the side content/challenges. It was just a blast controlling those characters and building them. Tanaka is a fantastic director. Square should give him way more major projects.

Dragon Quest XI was a fun ride, but the battles get super boring after a while and after you have built your party the way you want. I am OK with them updating the battle system in an FF remake as long as the story is intact and not some marvel multiverse spin-off that pads Nomura/Kitase/Nojima's bloated egos as washed up hacks who can't or won't write a coherent script anymore.

The action in "remake" was alright, though, overall, especially if you just control Cloud. I had fun with many of the battles. My gripe is Ch. 16-18 and what that says about Square Enix, Nomura, Kitase, Nojima. and how they really betrayed the inner child of a generation intentionally through that disgusting ending.

I guess at this point it's a curiosity why someone cares so much to defend Square Enix from literally every critic that shows up on here. Like what does one get out of that? I don't really get it.

OP, I can absolutely assure you that at least nothing in the game is as cringe as this...

Congratulations, BTW, you got a reply from me. It's my new year's eve gift to you!

Anyways...

Well, at least this is a much more direct and honest reply from you than usual and I can understand preferring to see an improved version of the original story you loved.

It will be interested to see how you view Rebirth depending on how faithful it is the the original.

The grunt video you posted in the first post was a little amusing (insane someone put that kind of effort into making it though) even if it is a bit trolly and they increased the volume while cutting out all other audio and stitched it together. Not really what OP was asking for but it gave me a chuckle.

Except I don't, and have agreed on points where the game falls short or where Square Enix falls short.

However, of course I'm going to disagree when you say objectively and factually misleading or outright false statements like Square Enix' profit and then try to incorrectly correlate it to FF7 Remake (which actually boosted it) or comments about FF16 (regardless of whether one thinks its good or not) success and other incorrect comparisons to JRPG sales, claims about the which employee did what on the team (like the Nomura stuff), etc. You don't really give people much of a choice when you argue the world is flat and it is, in fact round or if you phrase your statements as if speaking on behalf of the world rather than of your own opinion. Otherwise, we would literally have to simply ignore your posts (basically everyone would) because we would otherwise be agreeing with false information or statements we don't agree with.

I also don't know if its really an appropriate statement coming from the user who has almost all his posts on this one forum and is so incredibly active (despite almost 100% of your posts being hate posts) that you make up around 25-35% of the entire forum's posts on your own... I'm not sure where you find the energy to hammer out the hate every single day all day long tbh.

Friend, i will not be playing "rebirth" so you will have to do without my opinion of it.

Oh, I'm actually quite sure you will considering how active you are on this forum. I have no doubts.
Ha, OK, sure. I don't think you fully comprehend how bad what they did with those last three chapters is from the perspective of original fans who thought this was going to be a faithful retelling. There is zero chance I will play any more of this cash grab spin off series. I will possibly support future Square Enix projects that have integrity like Trials of Mana or Dragon Quest. But I am done with Final Fantasy unless Sakaguchi comes back to Square. Even then with Sakaguchi hypothetically returning, I am probably still done with it. It had its day. It is a shadow of its former self now. And that's the way it is. Times change.
