First, did you enjoy the original? If so it might be worth considering, but if you've never played the original it is also designed for those who have never played the original or an FF game in their life.
Next, if you played the original know that this is not a 1:1 remake. The name has two meanings. One, it is a remake or "bold reimagining" and looks much like the original just updated and expanded but you will see differences along the way, though nothing overly major until late in the game so episode 1 follows close. However, the second meaning is more important and it is that this is a sequel to the original and not a remake of the same story. This with minor spoiler (pretty obvious early in tbh) involves time travel and defying destiny, aka that future of the original game hence remake (remaking the future). Episode 2 is Rebirth because it is the birth of a new future from the old and I wont spoil more beyond that.
Some people really hate time travel themes, parallel universes, or their favorite stuff seeing any change even if it isn't changing the original timeline but actually a continuation sequel of that story... If you love the original and hate to see any change then you should avoid this. If you aren't in that category and aren't necessarily against time travel and parallel worlds then, yes, the game is pretty good.
Now, be warned the game is a bit linear, though episode 2 will be way bigger and open world, as the game is very story focused and limited by PS4's tech (mainly SSD, it launched on before porting to PS5/PC). There will be lots of cutscenes and dialogue compared to most games higher ratio of sheer gameplay vs dialogue. It feels more like a Metal Gear Solid game in terms of gameplay to story ratio, but not as extreme as Xenosaga, if you are familiar with either of those. Imo, story and cast are good. Combat is okay but nothing special, though it does improve on the original's flawed combat balance issues and lack of depth. Note the combat looks somewhat action oriented but this is no Final Fantasy XV, still having a strategy ATB system at its core as the main focus with some minor action elements to enhance combat.
I never had a Playstation so never played FF7 before, but I did really enjoy FFX, FF15 and a lot of the Gameboy Advance games like FF:Tactics.
8 has an incredible story and a believable cast, though the cast may take a little time to properly grow on you and fully appreciate.
9 is really good all around, with a solid story but not on the level of 8 (not many if any really are on 8's level anyways), a very likeable cast, and some great supporting characters.
They are both on Steam like the original VII, as well, though I've heard the remaster of 8 isn't as good as the original on Steam just a warning.
You might also be interested in the Tales of series like Tales of Arise and Legendary Heroes games (Trails of Cold Steel, Trails in the Sky, etc. a super massive series) if looking at other options to play.
There is definitely some nuance to my position that has been lost on you.
I have leveled numerous criticisms at elements of the game. On the balance, I say it is a great game. But I am real about it.
I do entertain, often even agree with, sincere, legitimate critiques of the game. I don't tolerate lies and spinning false narratives, and bad opinions utilizing faulty rationalizations, and, with me, that extends well beyond this game.
"I don't like the combat in this game." ...Okay.
"I don't like the combat in this game because it is a DMC ripoff with Disney writing specifically designed to ♥♥♥♥ on the franchise and sell gatcha mechanics." ...I have issues with.
If you never played og, dont expect much exploration, enjoy story/cutscene driven games with real time action battles, then absolutely yes (at 50% discount). Some scenes/battles were very impactfull.
obviously there's critiques. I agree with, but it's my favorite SE Game since FF9.
It's probably most similar to FFX in how linear it is. So it's not like XV.
But imo, if you want a traditional JRPG get Dragon Quest XI, which is also on sale. I love both games.
The biggest issue is the sheer quantity of DonJon and Ness posts which make up like 1/3rd (sometimes half) the forum post activity means we see specific types of responses due to the troll nature of those two (hence DonJon's most recent ban where they were intentionally openly trolling such as declaring to not read post responses correcting them but intentionally spreading incorrect info about actual game mechanics or elements, spamming Disney and acknowledging it was meant to start a flame war, and other negative or completely off topic comments).
You end up having to often driving the conversation in a certain way so it seems imbalanced and it appears overly positive.
Ah, Final Fantasy X is a rather good example of comparison. Why didn't I think of that.
Hahahahah you made me feel like I won the haters award https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qsZakIjAmvo&pp=ygUURGF2ZSBmaGFwcGVsIGhhdGVycyA%3D
But yeah this games sucks its corny!
