FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE

Will I still enjoy this while not really being an RPG fan?
I get overwhelmed with complex RPG style games and find them intimidating to play.

How in-depth is the RPG system for this one and can I still enjoy this game/have fun with not being an expert at it?

The RPG system in this game is very simple. The combat is more action based than RPG, so it's not going to be a turn-based thing, you know? It's a weird system, though. You'll feel like your actions don't have much weight to them, since Square Enix tried to basically fuse turn based with action in this one. It feels pretty muddy, to be honest.

***If you are overwhelmed by the difficulty, you can select easy mode and just enjoy the story. It's a weird, hands-off combat system, but it is what it is. The story is decent enough, but makes a lot of unnecessary changes from the original and adds A LOT of pointless filler.***

The high points are that it's presentation is insane, with cut scenes and gameplay looking near-identical. The sound is great, the voice acting is hit or miss in English but is more consistent in Japanese. The main story is good enough, with some really great high points but very, very bottom-tier low points. Overall, I found the experience to be inconsistent as a stand-alone game.

That's my two-cents. Brace yourself for A LOT of opposing opinions.
Don't listen him. He hated the game and want convince people to not buy the game.
Probably a hardcore fan of the original game and be so frustrated by the game not being what it's want to be.

Do your own opinion, you can refund the game if you play less than 2 hours.

For my opinion: I can't tell: RPG are very easy ( especially FF7 original: much easier FF games) so I don't understand why you said about "complex RPG style" , are you talking game like Dark Soul?

This remake is not difficult and you can play on "easy" difficulty.

Its not really an RPG. FF7R is basically a story-driven action. All characters are pre-made and while there are some choices here and there none of them let you "role play" and project yourself. Progression system also isnt complex at all.
It's not what I would consider "complex" and is fairly accessible with difficulty options to adjust the experience accordingly. The game doesn't feel like it throws too much customization at the player to make it unduly burdensome, and maybe outside of the later unlock able Hard mode, mastering all the systems at play isn't necessary to get through the game.

I would say having played the original FF7 and to a lesser extent, its spinoffs, would give more context to the narrative. However, it probably isn't necessary to get the broad strokes of the story. And I expect playing the future two games in the trilogy this kicks off will fill in a lot more.

According to the developers, this game was designed to be newbie friendly.
Even though its good, definitely don't play this without playing the Original first.

Cause this is actually a sequel in disguise and things at the end wont make any sense if you dont already know how the original goes.

The parts where its being the original are great, but then you hit the last act and its clear that its a sequel and the new part at the end teasing the next parts isnt nearly as well done as what came before.

You'll probably enjoy it, it's basically a movie with an occasional sluggish action combat, its RPG parts are very light, give it a shot!

(Don't bother listening to guys telling you to do the original first, it's just too dated for a newcomer in the franchise, it will probably put you off)

If combat difficulty or mirco-managing complex progression systems is your chief concern, I don't think that you'll find the game is too intimidating on 'Normal' mode. Although, its boss-type encounters will often require you to pay attention to what is happening in order to properly react and/or switch to the character that might have the most useful ability in a certain situation. This might mean switching to a character like Barret, who can do ranged attacks as a matter of course (without necessarily spending special abilities), or switching to (or issuing commands to) a character that has an attack that has an area of effect (like Tifa's Starshower) to hit multiple enemies (without expending magic points). It might mean switching to a more mobile character to more easily dodge an attack that cannot be mitigated by blocking (and these are clearly indicated in advance).

Having played the game several times though, including on the harder difficulty mode, I can say that it is very fair. Any boss attack that isn't clearly shown as an "!" unblockable, can be parried or blocked (mitigated) if you master the timing. Even lightening magic cast against the party can be, although that is much more chance-y (by design) than evading fire and ice attacks. And unblockable attacks can often be avoided by interacting with the field/environment in a certain way. And when you switch characters, the time even freezes in that instant as the camera shifts position, so it's not this unfair, disorienting thing.

The combat is really focused around building an ability gauge in order to use more powerful abilities, often in order to exploit weakeness and "stagger" enemies so that you can momentarily deal very heavy damage. Basic weak attacks are mostly used as a means to that end, although some of the weaker foes can be beaten with weak attacks, albeit in more time. The characters who aren't being controlled in a given moment are played very conservatively by the CPU, meaning that they tend to execute only weak attacks and block. This tends to mean that they also build their ability gauge much more slowly, and this is very intentional. The idea is that the game really wants you to play all the characters in order to complete the fights smartly while sustaining less damage. You can't just hide off to the side while the CPU wins the fights for you the vast majority of the time. So player agency very much lies with you, and many of the harder enemies are slow to damage without being staggered.

Additionally, there is an ability that indicates enemy weaknesses, so it's not too esoteric or, you know, having to constantly engage in trial-and-error. But nor it is just a mindless hack and slash, most of the time, unless you really, really insist on trying to play that way. I'm groping for a fair way of putting it... It's strategic enough, but it doesn't absolutely DEMAND that you constantly engage in all of the unique mechanics/abilities for each character. Outside of some of the optional Hard Mode challenges, anyway.

Each character has a max of six special abilities that are somewhat context-specific in terms of how they are best utilized. Beyond that, the main skill progression comes by way of equipable magical rocks, more or less, that confer various active and passive abilities and boosts. It's really only as complicated as you want it to be. You can get into more "advanced" combinations that might trigger an effect based on what the party leader is doing, or setting up a casting "loop" of sorts to recoup your magic points through the act of casting spells. That is probably about as complicated as it gets, and managing magic points is really only a concern on the game's Hard Mode.

"Hard" or "easy" for an RPG is such a relative, historically-contingent thing that's hard to pin down. People will often speak as if more "traditional" "turn-based" RPGs are just bursting with strategic depth, when, oftentimes, that's really just not the case. I find this game, certainly on Hard Mode, to demand much more careful and attentive play than its OG counterpart, but I still wouldn't consider it to be intimidating or overly "nerdy" from a systems/progression management standpoint. And I actually think that's to its benefit. The demands of the combat really arise naturally out of the way its action and menu-based elements synergize together. For example, casting a "Level 3" "-aga" elemental spell in this game really requires careful consideration in a real-time action context, rather than being more of a "press 'x' to win" formality like in the older games. The longer casting time opens a strong possibility of being interrupted, and magic points can be a precious resource, especially in Hard Mode. At the same time, the payoff of landing such a spell can be absolutely huge. It's exciting in a way that the older games never quite were, most of the time, outside of optional super bosses or occasional spikes in difficulty. And even then, not in the visceral way of being exciting that 7Remake can be.

But to try and bottom-line it: You probably won't have much trouble on Normal Mode. However, if you are not very experienced at both RPGs and Action combat, then a few of the bosses might give you a real run for your money. And even in moments when the game is, arguably, a little too easy, it's still just a lot of fun to get your teeth into the four characters, each of which almost feel like their own distinct game unto themselves...but, again, not in a way that's overly drawn-out to the point where your're spending more time in menus or having to juggle so many abilities/items/equipment/cool-downs that you can never quite get your head all the way around it. In other words, I think it's actually a bit less "bloated" than many RPGs in that regard. (full disclosure: I've been playing jRPGs since the first Final Fantasy on NES).
