This game's combat system is very different from its original and many of the FF titles before FFXV. Most of the earlier FF games were more strategy than action.

If you're looking for a game most similar to this one, Crisis Core is probably your best bet and that one is even in the same world setting.

I think Final Fantasy XV is action-based. I'm not 100% sure of that. The setting didn't interest me enough to play it.

I've heard that Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is supposedly a retelling of the very first Final Fantasy in an alternate timeline. That sounds about as lame as JJ's Star Trek, but it will also be an action-based FF, so check it out when it comes out.

If the action part doesn't matter to you, and you just want to explore the over-arching story of the series, then, you're in luck: there isn't one. Every roman-numeral Final Fantasy title is its own world setting and story, with the exception of XIV (because whiny WoW-babies cried so they rebuilt the game into a fan service milking machine).

If you're looking for settings that resemble FFVII's, Final Fantasy VI has a somewhat similar theme. It's not going to look as pretty by today's standards, however.

If you're looking for a female version of Cloud, Final Fantasy XIII offers exactly that.

This one is a stretch for comparable world settings, but Final Fantasy X is sorta close. I personally think that's more of a wasteland setting, but it's got an urban look to it.

Almost all of the roman-numeral games are separate world settings, so they can be played in any order. They share some commonalities such as creatures (Chocobos, Moogles), iconic character names (Cid, Garland), and summons or spells (Ifrit, Shiva, Firaga, Blizzaga). There are some exceptions:

  • XIII and XV apparently both share the same universe.

  • XIV is like a cross-universe MMO with a bunch of stuff from various games in the series. It's got its own story still, I think, but it's not that good.

  • XI is an older MMO from the EverQuest era when MMOs were a new thing.

  • Some of the numeral games have sequels/prequels. Usually they're easy to spot (ex: Lightning Returns is XIII, Crisis Core is VII, etc.,)

  • Some are just one-offs, like Final Fantasy World or Crystal Chronicles, these are side-games that experiment with new game mechanics.

IMO the best classic FF games are 6 through 10. I personally love 7, 8, and 10 the most.

A lot of people have different opinions and it will probably come down to personal preference.

If you like 8-bit games, 4, 5, and 6 are great games. If you're looking for more action-oriented FF games, 12, 13, and 15 might be worth looking at.

Tbf there's no real answer to "equally as good". 7 remake stands out because it's a well done remake.

X is great but to me the remaster is worse than the original because it made characters look "weird".
Combat in 13 feels like a coach telling your team what to do. Guess that's why it puts people off but it's still enjoyable.

Another aciton oriented FF game that i know , and its coming to steam , is FF origins:Stranger of the Paradise

I haven't played it yet , but i heard its a souls-like .

- For those who know the game, how is it in terms of mixing turn-based and real-time action? and...

- Are there FF:REVII-like summons ?

If you like Nioh and FF franchise you'll probably like Stranger in Paradise. It's action based real time combat. No mix like FF7 remake.

No summons.
