Just know FF16 it’s going to take an hour and half to get interesting but once it does it hits you and never stops hitting you and it feels Final Fantasy. It reminds me of playing FFXIV ARR and after FF12 and FF13 and it’s sequels almost ruined the franchise you left for the airship and felt that Final Fantasy experience.

The game is simply amazing and the beginning of the game fools you into thinking it’s just another western copy of The Witcher but no it’s beautiful.

Just know there is no wokeness in the game. The worst people in this game are women. It does show skin, a lot of skin and it’s a mature game.

Yoshi P fended off NFTs and now wokeness. Seriously if you own a PS5 get FFXVI the demo doesn’t do it justice. The game does take a while to open up but it does right before the flashback scene is about to end.

Btw I know this will be hard to believe but they made CID cool again and likeable.

FFXVI is pretty good.

Didn't seem to take that long to get interesting. Doesn't make me think of the Witcher.

Seriously if you own a PS5 get FFXVI the demo doesn’t do it justice.

I am about 10-15 hours in, demo seemed to be representative of what it is about. At least for as far in as I am now. Demo is a little tighter paced.

Btw I know this will be hard to believe but they made CID cool again and likeable.

He's in the running for my favorite iteration of Cid in all FF.

PS5 is easy to find now I’ve been seeing them in stores. Is it worth it? For even PS4 games, yes everything runs better and a lot of your PS5 games will have PS5 free upgrades.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll pick one up soon-ish. I don't play a lot of PS exclusive games and the only one I had some concerns about was GOW: Ragnarok, but it runs fine on my PS4, so I never really had a reason to buy one.

With FF16 and Rebirth on the horizon, I'm debating on making the purchase. Ultimately, I'll end up buying them again if/when they land on Steam--it's really a matter of whether or not I want to wait, which I probably don't if it's gonna take more than a few months.

Final Fantasy games should be boycotted until they bring back the option for turn based combat.

I get the new generation wants pure action and I have no issue with that as long as I can turn on turn based mod where everyone lines up and its turn based

It's fine if you don't like the new direction Squeenix is going with their games, but I, and others actually enjoy them.

It wouldn't make sense to boycott something that we like. And Squeenix most likely made these changes because they believed it would garner more sales or were the natural next stage for the series.

We saw the same thing when Yakuza turned into a turn-based series. A lot of people hated the change. but I enjoyed it.

Vote with your wallet, go for it. I like turn based. I'd rather that. But I do enjoy these games that are action based. If I boycotted them, I'd be missing out on games that I like.

There is no need to boycott them to bring back turn-based. The easier fix is for them to stop calling these games Final Fantasy, as they are no longer FFs. The reviews that aren't gushing over "10/10 GOTY!" are honest about the lack of RPG elements, the lack of party members, lack of support magic, lack of customization, lack of exploration/secrets, the constant cutscenes interrupting gameplay (though apparently many find the story interesting, which is good to hear), the MMO fetch quests from an MMO-style quest hub, and the hack-and-slash battle style that is evidently very easy and that does not demand strategy for bosses, which are described as enemies with large HP pools (MMO influence from FFXIV). Eikon battles seem to be very impressive visually but mostly movies with quick time events. Again, I think it's totally fine for Square to move in this direction if they want, and they are still trying to make RPGs some like with Octopath (though the story on that series is purportedly lacking). It may make sense for them and Sony to head in this direction as a business decision. But the only thing this game has in common with Final Fantasy at this point is a name and having someone named Cid in it. Calling this game "The Dominant Saga" or "Valisthea Chronicles" or something like that would make more sense, and it would probably make a lot of old school FF fans happy to see that they aren't trying to call these games FFs anymore when it's deviated so dramatically from not only the series' roots but also from being an RPG at all, let alone JRPG. But then of course, with those names they wouldn't get that baked-in FF brand recognition, so they will keep calling these games Final Fantasy and choose to mark this as the clear departure for the series into the action genre, fully abandoning the JRPG heritage of the series.

FFVII for instance literally took control of the player's menu screen and moved materia around to show them how the system worked. Barret explicitly tells Cloud how to fight the scorpion boss and deal with his gimmick. The games tells you to press Select and it will put a literal hand over the player character and markers on exits and intractable objects.

FF was always at least good graphics when compared to its contemporaries. If not an/the industry leader.

There are still some game devs that are into that. SE is appealing to a more mass casual audience now, and they see their old games purely as business opportunities, not as the legacies that made them that deserve respect. FF7's "Remake" is the best illustration of that imaginable. It is what it is. SE is increasingly operating as part of Sony's flagship--they recently bundled the PS5 with FF16 and released a super awkward commercial with influencers and athletes reading from a teleprompter unconvincingly saying how much they enjoy playing FF16--target audience is crystal clear.

The conclusion I've come to is that there will never be another FF game as we know it. FF7 and FF10 were the peak of the series, and we won't have another as great as those. That's OK. Nothing good of this nature like a game or a movie or a tv show or a novel series can last forever and keep pumping out hit after hit. Everything has its time. I think JRPGs in general had their heyday and it's basically gone now, except for the Persona series maybe, but that one has its problems. Check out Eiyuden Chronicles if you were a Suikoden fan--it's an interesting fan-backed spiritual successor to the classic.

Reviews and, as you're doing, speaking with your wallet. Buy turn based games, don't buy Action based games.

Damn can I pin this as my awsner to my mods thread. Jeus nah well im glad I got to vent a little just upset me when I saw the game play and was like agin and then they have no forum and never see anyone talking about it. Whether you buy it or not that's up to you, but watching gameplay footage is probably the best way to decide, and reading about it. As you said it's basically an action game. If you're into that, FF16 could be fun, but if you're looking for classic FFs, this is not it, in my opinion at least.
