combat/gameplay is actually its saving grace,
TLDR if u never played the og, i'd suggest that instead
if u don't care about the plot why even bother with an RPG
port is decent enough i think, there are few 3rd party tools to clean it up like unreal unlocker, and i use a wide screen fix that comes with a bunch of optimizations
I have nothing against the plot. I just didn't know if this game is worth getting with what looks like problems to me.
2. The port is fine if you have the hardware for it, this is a modern game that requires modern hardware, if you play on older hardware expect bad performance unless you dumpster your settings/resolution.
3. Works with K+M and controller.
4. Use classic mode to fix this, which is a decent medium between things. You can also use mods found at Nexus to tailor things to your liking including the original outfits you want.
Up to you ultimately buy it now or wait 5+ years for the whole thing to be released as an anthology. Either way, it's a fun game especially on NG+ with mods.
I wouldn't recommend it lol. Canada could be worse but it's not a great place to live either, I'd put it on the bottom of the 1st world nation list given the problems here with random violence, drugs, grifters screwing over immigrants, healthcare crisis, housing crisis, stagnant wages...
I can keep going. Right now Canada is not an ideal place to live and probably won't be for the next decade.
Thank you
Well my hardware is still on the old side. Had to go back to my 16:9 monitor as my 1080p monitor broke. If it goes on sale for low enough then maybe. Otherwise I may as well wait it out.
2. Its barebones in terms of features. But it works fine, performance is great, anything remotely decent released in last 5 or so years will run this game easily. Some players report stuttering but I've never got any outside of very rare cases of background level loading (happens only in one area that combines sectors 5 and 6, and in intergrade when going from sector 7 to newly added factory area). This is classic UE4 problem, not exlusive to this game.
3. Never tried, cant comment. But games of this genre are obviously designed around gamepads.
4. Combat is pretty fluid once you learn it. ATB works like cooldown on skills. You can speed up it with spells and materia from battle intels to the point when you can almost spam abilities non stop. Most playable characters have at least one ability that puts medium poise enemies in pressured state instantly (for high poise you'll have to look into weaknesses and special conditions that are often listed after assessing) and at least one ability that builds stagger really fast on pressured enemies. For Tifa and Cloud one of those abilities partially refund ATB so they arent only essential to dealing damage but also increase overall abilities uptime.
You are not forced to switch characters. Ranged weapons are better against flying enemies but they are very rare and you can use magic instead. In fact I consider playing exclusively Cloud all game a secret "super easy" difficulty mode because of his automatic melee counters and because his abilities have very good tracking and almost never miss targets (while Tifa's will miss a lot of you just spam them), he's a jack of all trades but with almost no tradeoffs (good at both melee and magic). Other characters are more niche, Like already mentioned ranged vs flyers, or Aerith vs enemies that sometimes get physical immunity, or Tifa vs enemies (well, its actually just one enemy, at the very end of VR bonus battles) that require a lot of dodging (Tifa is dodging queen, and with parry materia it gets ridiculous).
This remake has a lot of glitz and glamour, combat is ...alright but it really lost a lot of the original stuff that made it so amazing. You get walked through the whole game, can't go the wrong way or it will either block the path or the npcs will tell you. The npcs in this game literally guide you through every little challenge which makes it mind numbingly easy.
The fights are the only thing that really save this game, the beauty of the game doesn't make up for the change in the story or the lack of actual substance. The summon system in this game is absolutely atrocious. Wooo we hit the limit gauge for summons so now we can summon something for 30 seconds.... half the time the battle stops before you hit a limit break and hard mode is locked until you play through the first time.
Normal should be - easy and easy should be - childrens difficulty...
I would go with the original as modders have made the game beautiful and worth playing in 2023 over this.
I am not saying don't try it but it really is the most expensive movie you will ever watch.
If you're a fan boi of of the OG and are not open to changes, you will probably not like it. If you don't give it a chance, you probably won't like it either way. Assuming you can do that, do you like action games? Do you like story heavy games? It is pretty strong in those areas.
But first and foremost, be honest with yourself. It's your time and money.
Don't like the idea of having useful abilities gated like that. Nor do I like being hand held all game. That sort of thing is for tutorials.
Not sure I would call myself a fan boy. Final Fantasy X on the PlayStation 2 was my first. Story can go either way with me, depending if it is good. Action games are good if they don't get repetitive.
Actually been playing a modded version right now. Only character model updates for FMV, field and battle. They do look better.
Thank you for the replies. I think I may just wait longer. Unless the game gets heavily discounted.
I waited for about $40 which it was on sale for for the better part of two months recently. That seemed like a worthwhile price. Not sure it will go much lower than that for awhile, but you can probably expect to see at least that price point on Steam within the next few months.
