Edit: and no voice acting doesn’t mean that you can’t name the protagonist lol
"15 even lets you create your own avatar and let you play him in single player"
This was PC-only experimental feature and thankfully its long gone now.
Everyone will still call you Noct tho. I dont remember many fully voiced games other than Fallout 4 where you can enter your own name and still be called by that name.
It is NOT a *necessity* to rename characters. It is a cinematic narrative with *pre-named* characters. Deal with it.
You mentioning FF15 makes zero sense considering the main story is STILL ABOUT NOCTIS, not some random Kingsglaive Comrades character. You're being delusional and pedantic over nothing.
Yoshinori Kitase directed VI, VII, VIII. He's Lead Producer of VII's remake trilogy.
Hironobu Sakaguchi stopped directing after FF5! And only CO-directed 9 with Hiroyuki Ito.
XII is literally the same universe as FF Tactics, which was years before it, still Final Fantasy.
The ENTIRE FRANCHISE is built upon the notion that IT ALWAYS CHANGES. It is never the same twice. That's *entirely the point*. The fact that you one minute proclaim "BUT FFXV LET ME BE MY COMRADES CHARACTER IN THE BASE GAME" and then claim "But FF hasn't been FF since 9 D:" is the most hypocritical backflip I've ever seen.
Fun Fact; TETSUYA NOMURA created the party characters of FFVII in 1997. He's Co-Director (and Creative Director) on Remake. If *Sakaguchi* had his way for FFVII in 1997, half the party would've died during the late-game Midgar parachute raid, completely ruining the weight and meaning of Aerith's death. NOMURA veto'd Sakaguchji's idea.
It's also rather funny that you're insinuating that "if Hironobu Sakaguchi were still on FF, the characters would be renamable!" ...Uh.. Y'know Fantasian on Apple Arcade has named characters that CAN'T BE RENAMED, right? Sakaguchi's game.
Lost Odyssey? YOU ALSO CAN'T RENAME THE CHARACTERS. Mistwalker/Sakaguchi's game.
The Last Story? NOT RENAMABLE. Sakaguchi/Mistwalker's game.
(FFIV only had them renamable through Namingway NPC, fyi...)
Look, you're just making yourself look incredibly silly now...
The FACT is that the narrative/story *itself* is intentionally cinematic about *the specific characters*. This isn't the '90s with voiceless characters anymore. It is a fully cinematic experience. They aren't YOUR characters. You are presented them by the creator. If you so desperately want a Final Fantasy game where you're the custom named character, then ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ play FF11 or FF14. That's literally the point of those games. (Note you ALSO cannot rename the NPC Scions of the Seventh Dawn in FF14 that make up the "party" your Warrior of Light goes on adventures with)...
Renaming characters is *literally* not necessary, and you're being insanely over-obsessive.
Oh please. There isn't one "true" era of Final Fantasy. Many who grew up with the Nintendo era games looked down on FFVII. Similarly, many who grew up with FFX despised XIII. And on and on it goes. You don't get to define what constitutes true Final Fantasy.
Not being able to name your characters is such a silly and pointless aspect to complain about.
