Overall, there will not be a significant change to Wedge. You get to know him a bit better but the story doesn't really place emphasis on his character, though it does give you drips of info along the way. He isn't a huge part of the story, though. He definitely isn't a useless walking fat joke, though, despite the front he often puts on. Biggs will also not get much attention in this episode, either, and arguably gets even less than Wedge.
None of the Avalanche side characters had much of a character besides being dead in the OG. The only exception is Jessie, as you get some forced interaction to progress the story, and many people didn't even realize her as even being Female until they saw her in remake.
I can understand the complaints about Wedge being the stereotype of big dumb dumb, but I just can't see OG having done better for Wedge's character.
At least he has more dimensions than in the original. Or any of his other FF appearances haha.
He means nothing, he's just here to prove he's such a real OG even though the character barely had 10 lines before he died like a pancake
He remains a corny comic relief type character. Even in the original he was goofy. I just took him as more of the "big and strong dumb guy" back then.

He also didn't survive the fall, then later the plate collapsing on him. Hell, I am not even sure Jessie is dead anymore.
