I think the difficulty only comes from HH really being the first boss in the game that you can't beat by just running up to it with a sword.

As soon as you switch to ranged combat and use Cloud as support, it becomes super easy.
I agree at some point, in my 1st play-through on Normal, when I took control of Cloud I found it hard but when I decided to take control of Aerith, I was able to beat it after like 10 retries (lol).

Every guide in the internet says Hell house is the hardest boss, hands down. I can say it's true in my case. In Hard mode, I beat it after like 20 retries but Sephiroth, only one retry (lol). But okay, people say Sephie is easy. Airbuster, Arsenal, and even Jenova are way easier than Hell house.
For my first playthrough I must have gotten a bit lucky then I guess. I remember trying with Cloud at least 5 times and then after swapping out my materia loadout and trying as Aerith instead, I got it first or second try. I haven't had any issue trying to beat it since then, but I have also come pretty close to mastering how the combat works since then too.

Yeah, Hell house is the gatekeeper in this game. You just stumbled into the hardest boss fight in the main campaign.
Bruh, the whispers were way worse but okay. Hell house is fine, just keep hitting it with magic.
Whispers are just long, yeah it is actually awful boss fights ngl, and if u didnt kill them while on stagger state, they regain full hp. On top of that, they merge to form Whisper Bahamut, and it is also hard. For some reason tho, I find them less threatening albeit being still hard boss fight as compare to Hell house. I assume u are talking about Whisper Harbinger.

Yeah u can use magic on Hell house but nevertheless, u can understand why most players find it hard to fight, aside from only two chars in one party, it is becoming way more aggressive after Phase 1. On the contrary, the pacing in other boss fights after each phase isn't volatile like Hell house.

It becomes easy as u master the use of spells. I think most boss fight becomes easy after u gained full understanding of how each boss works. But as far as newbies are concerned, Hell house will be forever a nightmare. XD

I would bet some players totally stopped playing at that point. Believe me, I almost quit. But thanks to Xengre's help by giving me some ideas, I was able to beat it the 1st time.

If I will list down the top 3 boss fights that gave me a lot of retries in both Normal and Hard (sidequests not included):

1. Hell House
2. Motor ball (I skipped it in Hard)
3. Scorpion Sentinel

😂

I beat the Hellhouse but imho it was easily the worst part of the game.

If you're stuck, it's the game's way of telling you to try something else.

Pro tip: Aerith is the key.
It doesn't have to be Aerith. Its just about casting opposite element at right time.

Doesn't have to be Aerith, yes, but still Aerith is the key point because HH has hard resistance against physical attack and Aerith is the magic user, even the basic attack.
I struggled with this one too but for different reason.
I just didn't wanted to play anyone other than Cloud so it took long time before finally beat this one
Poison works on it too, if you can't be bothered to pay attention to the windows just outlast it. Poison works on so many bosses.

Poison is amazing against virtually any target that isn't immune to it.

As for Hell House, you need not only to match its current vulnerability, but also timing. Use quickly cast lower level spells instead of highest level ones, and stay on defensive unless the House is "down" and pressured/staggered. You might also want to pair Elemental materia with Fire since that seems to be the most common type of attack from the boss. Blizzard can be more tricky to land a hit with than the other elements, so focus on exploiting weakness to Thunder, Aero and Fire. Aerith's Lustrous Shield helps avoid damage from chair missiles.
The subject G is harder than the house...Maybe you should try another difficulty mode.

I found subject G far easier than Hell House. Hell House is an extremely tedious fight as well as the enemy itself being utterly stupid in both games.

What is subject G, if I may ask?

One of the Jenova abominations iirc

The problem is that if you go into the fight without the correct elemental materia you're pretty much screwed. Since you're not expecting this and you can't equip materia on the fly that can be extra challenging.

This + the fact that you're going in with just two party members is indeed rather annoying, especially if the player has not prioritized unlocking many materia slots... but maybe those players are not so many, dunno.

i loved the Hell House battle. i was not really sure how much i liked the combat until that fight. it all sort of finally clicked during that one. beat it first attempt and had a lot of fun.

i struggled way more with the stupid pull-ups minigame.

It is also very satisfying to get it done just right, more so than other bosses.
