Why was the demo completely disabled for new players?

I had this game in my cart and then I remembered there was a demo so I thought I'll try that, but it was all removed from the page. So I looked and found it and it turns out you guys removed the ability to get a license for it, why?

This is fairly common practice. Demos are based on very early builds of a game and rarely reflect the finished product.

In this case however the demo did reflect the finished product because there's just not much to the game beyond doing what you do in the demo over and over and over again.

It's somewhat expected for it to be removed from the page but to actively delete the ability to use it when it's still on Steam is somewhat scummy, Loop Hero for example removed it from the store page but you can still play the demo.

Would the devs really prefer I buy it and refund it if I don't like it? Doesn't that take money away from them or something?

Yeah this is 100% ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I was looking forward to this game, but if the Devs are going to be scummy and take a freakin' demo away from us... ain't no way i'm supporting that practice. Yohohoho a pirate's life for me.

Ignoring the smartass second part of your comment... no. This is, at most, true about half the time, and in this case the demo came out not two weeks before launch. They had a carefully curated vertical slice of gameplay for the intro and first mission, which were almost certainly finalized and polished that close to release, and it's what sold me on the game. Now they've just scrapped it. It's utterly baffling.

Installed the demo yesterday, didn't get around to playing it and today it's gone...

Oh wow, I thought they were only restricting new licenses but they revoked old ones? I was going to add that to the OP but I thought I would just be assuming and wrong.

Oh, they remove the demo even after you download and install it? So much for me thinking I’ll give this a whirl again today after work to let the demo convince me a 2nd time.

Yeah I just discovered this as well.... I played a couple minutes up to the tutorial but got busy and figured I'd give it a go this weekend before buying. Now i'll probably just wait for the reviews and for sale time to come around

If you had downloaded the demo before it was pulled you can still play it. It's in the steamapps folder just like a regular game
