Game not running in background?

I have the game window open in the background while playing another game, but progress is halted during this game. Any ideas why?

Check in options if you have "Sleep mode timeout" turned on and if you do, turn it off

I have the same problem. The game goes down to 1 fps as soon as I open another fullscreen window. Since the game's speed is tied to fps, it basically works 60 times slower. Either the game or windows lowers fps of backround programms to reduce the load.
Asked this question already here but people dont understand the problem.
The only way I found to fix this is keeping the game window visible. Either somewhere small in the corner or on the 2nd monitor if you have one.

You're right. It worked perfectly fine for the first few days before the update. I wonder if it's intentional.

Thats odd, mine does too. However all information i've found on the wikia when I went to look up the research function claimed that the game was running at 30 fps.

The game does pause for me too but the sleep mode timeout is deactivated.
