Garden mutation places

I dont understand why for garden size 4 the suggested places to plant is

and not

if the mutations goes in orthogonal and diagonal plots, why it is needed to waste two more seeds?

Does only lets you use 4 empty slots for mutations; let me put an X in the spots which won't get used to show it.

This is because the right hand side is too far from Plant 'G' to allow mutations in the right side slots, while the left hand side is too far from Plant 'y' to allow mutations in the left side slots.

i thought it was orthogonal+diagonal from any plant, not from the furthest plant, now i got it, thanks!
