Technically, the worms aren't infinite for those who like math. They will copy the number of worms from the trough to their inventory, then will proceed to eat the ones in their inventory until they have run out. At which point, they take from the trough again, reducing the inventory by 1, and reducing the amount of worms they copy by 1. So you have the factorial of the number of worms in the trough if you don't refill it. Other animals do not have this behavior and will directly eat from the trough so they will reduce the amount you can copy by however much food they require.
Slight addendum: It seems while you're outside the camp, the game is still counting pecks. This is very wishy-washy, but I think when you return to the camp, the next time they peck for worms, it counts each of those unrendered pecks as being a new worm. Which means each of those unrendered pecks adds the number of worms currently in the trough to their inventory. I had 975 worms in my trough, and after going to the Wasteland for about 5 minutes, I came back to 14705 in each of the female chickens. I suppose I will be finding the stack limit soon
