Unique characters better?
I ask because I already spend some charms on standard units. Now I read somewhere that unique characters have better stats. So should I rather use the unique ones?

In my opinion, yes. I only use unique characters now after finishing the whole game ( all routes ), they are many anyway so you do not need standard units.

in general yes. stats themselves aren't that important in Reborn. the different stat growths of classes has been lowered a lot compared to previous versions of the game. the difference in growth is still there its just greatly diminished and you can always farm infinite charms to make up for any discrepancy.

however

a lot of the unique characters come with built in 'enhanced' base RT (their recovery time stat is lower) compared to generic units. and this isn't a stat you can modify with charms.
Ozma for example has a base RT (before gear) of 35 where a generic unit has a base RT of 50. so shes a lot faster.

Ozma, Hobyrim, Ravness for example are flat out the fastest characters in the entire game. they can in some cases be so fast they get multiple turns while other characters get 1.

others come with unique classes that are unique to them (knight commander for example) that also entail advantages and move sets only they can use.

even the 'named generics' you get at the start of the game like Sara (base RT 47)and Voltare (base RT 46) have slightly lower RT than normal.

i always tend to use both Sara and Voltare throughout all my play through's. they are like my jobbers that i just get attached to and never seem to replace :P
in general you end up with so many named units in your army that generic units aren't really worth it.

Generics do have some uses like sacrificing them to become liches, divine knights, cursed weapons ect.
and generally generic hawkmen are great generics to use for their innate fly ability.

Same for me, though I always change Sara to a knight and Voltare to a warrior, since I love how the generic female knight portrait looks and Voltare eventually becomes my TK.

One cool thing about Reborn is that uniques can be liches now, even Denam!
Unfortunately not divine knights, though, since "true" uniques can't be zombified, meaning they can't turn into skel/ghost and therefore no divine knight. Would be cool if they let Denam be an exception to this and skip straight from regular unit to divine knight, giving his sprite wings, but Lord Denam with Winged Rings is good enough.

i also make Voltare a TK late game. Sara is my ninja once i get Arycelle as an archer :)

Unique Characters (units whose sprite does not change with their Class) could transform into Liches even in the PSP version of the game (LUCT).

It's Named Generics (units whose sprite changes with their Class but have personal entries in the "People" section of the Warren Report) that couldn't transform into Liches or Divine Knights (via being Zombified and turned into a Skeleton), and these restrictions are still present in Reborn.

Aside from Unique Characters and Named Generics, Generic Units in the Lich and Divine Knight Classes are also unable to be Zombified (using the Living Corpse Spell on their incapacitated body shows a 0% chance of success).

Alright, i trained up all my chars and compared attributes/RT and the uniques really are better than the standard recruits you can get.

I remember caring for recovery time at the beginning, but it seems i somewhat neglected it because that would have made it clear. Also, the archer gal that can join you (Arycelle) is really more effective than my other bow user. Glad levelling up doesn't take ages! :)

Now the only downside is that i already picked up a few attribute cards and used charms on one or another standard char, but i'm sure this won't be a problem;) Thanks for the answers, by the way!

tbh I never really dabbled in liches/divine knights in the PSP version. Most of my experience with this game has been the PS1 incarnation, with 5 or so runs of the PSP version, some of which were just bum rushing the main game and not diddling around in CODA. Uniques could turn into liches in the PS1 version, but iirc it would list them as KIA in the Warren Report and you couldn't revert them to any other class.
