Overall I'm happy with this new version, and it's the version I'll end up replaying in the future.
I understand most of the complaints about Reborn, and they tend to fall into one of two classes: 1) There's not enough new to warrant the $50 price tag, and 2) Change X was a bad change.
Personally, I do think there's enough changed to warrant a $50 price tag. To me--in no particular order--the voice acting, upscaling (while the character sprites are divisive, I include in this the menus, icons, and all other art), rebalancing of classes/weapons/skills/magic to have fewer boom/bust classes, completely redone sound effects, and new orchestral renditions of all the music are enough. I can totally understand though people comparing this game to other games at the same price point and saying it's not worth it.
As for the bad changes, I agree with some of them. The removal of the Rogue class (not enough time to balance it, apparently) and the removal of random fights on old maps outside of Training in a city are both objectively bad decisions to me. That said, I don't find either to be a huge deal.
The most controversial in terms of some people liking and some people disliking is probably the introduction of battle cards during combat. These are cards that semi-randomly spawn in as you fight and give one of a few bonuses (extra physical or magic damage, increased crit chance, and more frequent skill activation, which is a random chance now). You need to balance grabbing cards versus better positioning.
I'm actually still on the fence on this change. I understand why some might not like it (many cards at some points cluttering up the visuals, or the idea that combat becomes card scavenging if you want it to), but I think on balance I just slightly prefer it being there.
I'm kinda sad that Front Mission 1 Remake doesn't actually have voice acting despite the graphics and speed improvement, wish they have added.
This version is certainly a lot less grindy, and streamlined in many ways. I've played the psx port, the psp remake and now this remaster and I can't really decide on a definite this is better version. I'd lean Towards Reborn=PSP>OG but it really depends on your mindset.
This is the main reason I liked the game. I don't have the same energy to grind as I did in other games so I really appreciated how fast you can bring a unit up to speed in this one.
