Engulf I - how to get it to work?

I've got Engulf I (Increase area of next ranged attack or spell cast by 2.) on an archer and a wizard and it doesn't seem to work with missile attacks, Aquablast, Avalanche or anything else? I was hoping to get some really big area Paradigm Shifts.

I've had a look and most threads seem to discuss a version that increases range, which I guess is an old version?

No, it's not an old version, engulf gives you range not area. They made a mistake and still didn't correct it-whether it's supposed to actually be area or range I'm not sure- but the text with the actual skill are mismatched.

It is a mistranslated. It actually increase a "range" of next ranged attack of spell.
Not sure if it work with finishing move or not.

Area would be a bit overpowered, because you also get engulf2 which is +3, but the tier3/4 indirect spells actually have area3/4 so they become big enough. Nothing you can do about paradigm shift though.

It's still really good. Engulf II combined with a staff/book that gives additional range turns your magic users into artillery cannons that can bomb groups from across the field.

It's extra annoying because the icon in the game for Engulf clearly represents increased area, not range. The basic concept of "engulf" fits more with area of effect than range.
