Do you need to succeed to level up tame/subdue?
So I read that leveling up subdue increases the range (and I THINK the chance) of recruiting a beast/dragon. I'm assuming this is done by using the skill repeatedly. If that is the case, do I have to actually succeed in recruiting in order to get skill exp? Can I just spam it from super far away with a 0% chance to succeed just to try and level it up?

Only weapon skill seem to level separately, every other skills unlock higher tier with level.

Recruitment skills don't have levels. They work in a convoluted mess. But, basically, once the enemy is below 20% HP, you have 20% chance of recruiting (as long as you are adjacent). This goes all the way up to 35%, depending on how low their HP is.

Just Tarot Scum in order to recruit.

You can't train it up by repeatedly using it. And the more you repeatedly use it on the same target the worse your chance of success is.

Knock the creature you want into the red, then try to recruit standing right next to it. If you can charm the creature, it should give you an even better shot at it. If you fail, use the chariot to rewind and try again standing in a different spot.

I've had it up to 39%, but i've only had that 2-3 times, and i'm not sure why.

You can also throw a couple of rocks to get an extra 1-2% chance of it working.

Recruitment skills sadly don't level up anymore, I don't get why they were given full map range since this is the case. Would figure they'd level up to be usable at further distances like older iterations.

Anyway this does simplify things, as long as your target is recruitable, low hp, and you have the right skill and are within a tiles range you can recruit with anyone as opposed to needing a dedicated character with Coax levelled or whatever.

Yeah leveling up the recruit skills in PSP was dumb. Anatomy you could level throughout the game, but Recruit? Hope you like using it every turn that you have enough TP, only to get 1 level in it after an entire playthrough.

This is part of the convolution. It's modified by the enemies' loyalty. The higher the loyalty, the lower your chance and the inverse applies as well. You can't directly see how much loyalty they have, but you can look at their stats, press the ? button and then check the portrait and it will indicate their loyalty. All pointless, just Tarot your way into recruitment.

There's multiple factors: First, you have to be 1-2 tiles away from the enemy. While it seems to have unlimited range, the chance is basically 0 unless you're very close.

Next, is the enemy's loyalty. As mentioned above, you can find it in the enemy's condition description. Lower loyalty means higher chances.

Finally, HP, as has already been discussed.

When using Tarot to redo your chances, make sure to take different actions. If you take the same actions, it uses the same results. So attack someone first, etc, to get a different seed.
