As up close damage dealers they get access to double attack, and are fairly potent with a decent coverage of weapon types. They get steelstance which is fantastic, but are still fairly squishy if you're using them for melee.
While I haven't tested it much, it seems their damaging spells are stronger than in prior iterations. While somewhat influenced by RNG, you could probably even make a solid mage out of one. Especially given you have some other utility options like Shadowbind to distinguish them from more pure casting classes.
I think to compensate for how they were made better generalists, they were hit a bit in the armor penetration department. They feel like... weird rune fencers to me now, I guess.
