Factorio's map is 2000km on a side, somewhere between India and Australia in size (Australia's bigger)
In practice, the game might hit a hardware limit, like running out of RAM and crashing if you explore too much.
My PC Ressources are not the problem, because the game dont take 100%.
So scouting the map seams possible, but not actual using it :D
I think that's indeed a PC hardware issue. in a multiplayer game (me and two buddies) we've expanded the base like 300-400 squares on the grid in every direction, and explored like 1000+ in every direction.
it doesn't seem to slow down on my end (I sometimes use a watch-timer on the server-ticks speed - I'm the host: Ryzen9 5900HX w. 64 GB DDR5 Ram, game is on a 2TB Samsung 990pro M.2 NVMe SSD installed)
I don't think it's an game engine issue. it's using UNREAL engine, which can do quite some heavy lifting - not sure which version though. Wouldn't be surprised, if it were version 5
