how does the giant fish work?

slowly going insane because im trying to avoid the fish while not knowing how to get to the mechanic dude i forgot what his name was

shrug... idk... it just past under the boat when I did it (last nite)... But pretty sure you can make landfall before it. Seems it really does't matter where you leave ur boat. The docks always spawn one for you. Definetly didn't notice the fish being there on the way back... but could have been because it was night by then.

Just stop rowing for a sec and it will go away, the big fish rarely hits you way out there anyways.

Walking away from the rear of the train, on your left hand side you'll find a path downward. There's a boat dock at the bottom (with no boat, IIRC), but to the left (EDIT: RIGHT, not left) of that you'll find a shallow water area that you can walk across. No boat necessary to reach the mechanic, but you'll have to sneak around a bit to get past first a pack of Watchmen, and later Humanimals.
