there is a reason why they tell you what is weak to what. water is his weakness. no wonder people are having problems with this game.

Elemental Resistances and Damage does not work like that in this game. For some enemies you can use their own element against them because they dont have high resistance to it.

is that why the super ultimate ice build that does one shot damage does crap damage against water and magic resistant?? when i used water (ice weapon) against lu bu he seemed to go down faster then using other builds. normal enemies arent the same as bosses and we are talking about a boss.

Some thing to remember is that bosses in this game aren't strict speaking 'weak' to an element that counters theirs, its more that they usually lack resistances to the element that counters theirs. In Lu Bu's case, water/ice works better than other elements because he doesn't have resistance to it. Poison on the other hand, is not so great, you can still poison him, but it goes away the moment he uses any of his fire attacks.

Pretty much :Tio:

I beat him easily with earth and metal spells. Imposing slab makes quick work of most bosses, especially when earth spells are your main element. It really makes most of the game easy mode. Just choose a weapon that scales primarily with earth and put most points into this category along with another that your weapon scales with (I use metal). I weaken and increase damage to him concurrently (using metal wizadry) and hit him with imposing slab when he gets close. Additionally, I make sure that my armor and weapons do increased damage to enemies with negative effects. Doing this makes easy work of basic enemies and bosses.

Something else to keep in mind regarding offensive spells, unlike souls games or Nioh, there's no one stat that scales the damage of all spells. To increase the damage of offensive spells you need to invest into the spells corresponding elemental virtue.

water -> fire -> metal -> wood -> earth -> water

water has the phase advantage. even the 0 moral ice bolt thing will put out his flames and lower the damage he does. his lowest resistance is water and his flames will cancel your metal wizardry. all other types are neutral.

I use wood for the health and healing buffs.

If you need to use metal, pair it with that frost bolt spell I mentioned, so you can put out his flames before hitting him with metal. otherwise, the metal would get countered.

When I fought him on Game Pass version after release, without any additional patch, Ice Bolt was not putting out his flame, ever. I have specifically used it to try to counter his fire buff, I definitely hit him as he had a bit of status effect build-up on him and I saw damage number popping up but his fire buff never went out. Might have been just one of many bugs in this game..

Most if not all elemental buffs by human bosses are handled by the game the very same as your divine beast enchantments: they cannot be put out. That's intentional as far as I know.

Well, I was responding to post where it was claimed Lu Bu's fire buff could be negated by hitting him with Water phase spell. It did not work for me for sure.

It is weird if what you say, ie. boss buffs are effectively not able to be removed by countering Phases, since this is one of the core mechanics of the game. You do not need to counter buffs on normal enemies since you can kill them easily. Where all this fiddling with spells and selecting correct ones to use would pay off is at boss fights. If it does not work, whole "pick correct Phase spells to increase your efficiency" premise is moot.

I think it may be more accurate to say bosses that summon divine beast for buffs or "merged" with divine beasts cannot have their elements negated. Thats what makes sense to me. 1st lu bu fight it seems like normal flame enchantment. 2nd he merged with his divine beast.

This is correct, buffs applied via Divine Beast cannot be negated through the five phases system, this applies to both enemies and the player.

The benefit of using water against Lu Bu (besides it being the element he doesn't resist) is that it also cancels out any patches of fire he creates and using a water spell immediately removes the burn status.

As far as I understood the intentions behind it, you use elemental weaknesses in boss fights to dispel negative status effects on yourself, clean up lingering AoE effects on the ground and use the weakness to cause status on the boss faster.
Since receiving a status makes both you and every enemy in the game stagger (even such chunky bois like Aoye), it's far from a moot point to use the correct phase.
In fact, in NG+ you might find it extremely useful to get a word or two in when the enemy keeps getting in your face all the time.

Absolutely correct.

Well its kinda funny. These water sirens are not weak to fire for example. They are weak to rock.

Makes perfect sense ;D
