As long as the other characters have good stories...and as long as those stories are actually shown
Just make cutscenes about the other characters, and less about your own.
It is different for games that don't really have a story like Minecraft. But if you want to tell a story and want the player to be a part of that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ let the character they control be part of that...
It's not even like they completely saved this money either. They still had to find at least two voice actors and pay them for grunting in multiple ways for the various base options we got (unless they used stock files which I doubt but is not impossible).
If I wanted to imagine myself as the character in the game I would just stop playing games and live my own ♥♥♥♥♥♥ life... Give player characters in cutscenes their voices back again!

William is barely even part of Nioh 1 story. He's very an outsider to most of the events. Which I guess does make him more relatable for some.
And just have you be able to switch between them during your playthrough
