This game is based on historical events/chapters of the Romance of the Three Kingdom novel, but only choosing some of the important events to focus on and using them as stages.
I think the dev might have expected many people to already be very familiar with the story of the ROTK (from playing Dynasty Warriors, ROTK strategy games, or just because they are Japanese/Chinese/Koreans etc), which is why there are doing such a bad job with it because it's nothing more than a backdrop/stage for the gameplay to take place.
Nioh 2's story is more coherent. I would instead compare this to Nioh 1's story that didnt have Hideyoshi's life as narrative thread.
Not to mention that the story goes in boring directions.
Oh, and almost no background lore.
It´s not all bad though, I really like what they did with Sun Jian´s story, and the yellow turban story was not bad. I just expected some more (side) mission levels about areas devastated by the yellow turbans.
Anyway, I expected better, I guess it was rushed

In those six years, you travel the world eating rice and doing nothing else cause finding food is supposedly hard af in that era.
Funnily enough I found Nioh 1 story far easier to follow. Everything was more or less related. Nioh 2 on the other hand was jumping all over the place. I think how they went about Hideyoshi was interesting and kind of smart to allow character creation but I much preferred the story telling of the first game.
Unfortunately this game has the same issue as Nioh 2 but this time you aren't even following a single character. You are just this nameless warrior who fights alongside multiple characters.
On a sidenote. Nioh 1 was following the life of the English sailor who first arrived in Japan. Yes, they changed things about it but still based on history. Maybe not as famous as Hideyoshi but famous nonetheless.
Exactly. When a protagonist is invested in the story, it's easier for us to follow, even when the storytelling is lackluster. Anjin-dono had an agenda, a goal outside of the constant betrayals and political affairs of the others characters. He was in japan for a reason. That's why in my opinion, the stories of Nioh 2 and wo long are way worst. The whole "silent protagonist" trope is really tiresome. Playing a character with no backstory, no goal and no real reasons to be invested in the plot is just bad.

When Cao Cao asked Guan Yu how many soldiers he needed, Guan Yu said I only need one person and looked to you
