People crap on this game because of performance yet for me it runs just as smooth as any other TN game (either solid 60fps or 120fps). Many Chinese players bombarded the steam with negative reviews because the game has subpar M/kb support but for most people these games are best played on a controller, and have been since the Ninja Gaiden days.
Just do what vast majority of people are doing. Playing the game, having fun and making up their OWN mind on the game. Let the whiners keep whining until they move onto the next game to repeat the exact same things.
True, but even the Nioh games, that the same people hating on this game praise, had subpar M/kb support because the amount of buttons/actions needed to pull the advanced stuff off was pretty high. This made M/kb feel unintuitive so most people play these games with a controller.
Why did Nioh 1-2 not get mostly negative reviews with their sub-par M/kb support? Its because people pick and choose what to whine about and are very hypocritical pointing out issues with games when some of the games they defend have the same problem. That and people have gotten very entitled/sensitive about EVERYTHING that does not go their way, especially over the past few years
At the end of the day, most people who enjoy TN games have been enjoying this game as well. People coming in expecting a "elden ring" killer, or a "souls-like" experience will not like it as much because that is not the kind of games TN makes. Expectations are everything and if you are expecting an apple but the game is actually and orange you will be complaining "why is this game an apple and not an orange.....whaaa whaaa this game sucks....whaaa" (very accurate representation of gamer outrage lol).
I'm not to far into the game yet and the only performance drop I had was a drop to 47fps so far. But kids these days get eye cancer from something like that i guess.
Comparing it to the nioh games is not going to do any good because wo long was waaaay more known at release l, so everbody and their mother jumped on it.
The other thing is skill issues. "The first boss is to hard"
Yes he is challanging (even lobos struggled for a bit) but you fight him very early so you can decide to refund the game if you don't like the callange.
Can't animation cancel into a deflect. That means attacking is inherently a risk. Add that to the fact that attacking barely moves the bosses break bar with regular attacks... They also function virtually the same as you. So one missed deflect means you lose a lot of progress of the current fight.
Spells aren't that good unless you lean heavily into it. Even then you have the same problem as weapom combat and need to eflect criticals to deal damage properly.
The maps are alright but just simply too small. And at the same time this hunting after flags is taking so much time while not really getting anything for it.
The loot is pretty pointless as well. You just take a weapon you like with as much stars as possible for slots and push that up. Same with armor. It's generally even worse than Nioh because the stats work like DS but you still get a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of items cluttering your inventory.
Honestly I really like that you are not limited in using spells or martial arts and also the enemy design and effects visuals but all in all I'm just not sold on the game after playing it for a while.
Going to get the achievements and shelf it until the DLC. All things together the game unfortunately is a bad mix between Nioh and Sekiro and you'd fare better to choose either of them to enjoy the features which either respectively excel at.
I played Nioh 2 with m+k and found it to be pretty comfortable and no complaints there at all. I completed the game and all DLC and after 300 hrs of NG+++ felt i had done enough. As long as i am able to map keys and buttons to how i would like to play, then i am happy. Its not a difficult feature to implement in games, and after all people just want to have the choice to play games in a way that they are comfortable with. I use controller for FIFA and M+k for all the souls like games. Its that choice which makes the PC so great.
Literally every angry or negative review practically screams that. The problem with their angry "I'll change my reviews once you fix this problem" reviews is that it affects the likelihood that we will get better games in the future. For games like this that are unique and more niche, it's extremely important for them to do good numbers.
Players realize this and are effectively tanking the chances of a Wo Long sequel because - reasons
It is normal to see these things more the further into the game, and the more accustomed to the gameplay. However when playing this game when you already have a lot of experience with these things, you can notice them really early on.
This is something you can notice immediately.
There are other ways to reduce their bar. Spirit Attacks. Status effects or Magic.
How frequently do you make use of these?
Light attacks have traditionally always been worse for breaking a breakbar in games that have it.
How so? There are 5 stats. Each of them is tied to a tree of magic skills. As a result there always spells you can use without specialising into it. That is different from Nioh where Onmyouji required putting in effort investing into the stat and skills.
Stats work really similar to Nioh. So I dont understand this complaint. The looting system is a bit improved compared to Nioh because we can customize from the start, and with most of the RNG or heavy cost removed.
I agree that we should have a skill menu for skills like in Nioh. We should be able to use more then just 2/3 and we should have more slots for spells. Aside from that I dont agree that spells are much more limited then in Nioh, tho.
Don't get me wrong, I think the game misses too much of the complexity that Nioh had. But I feel that people are too intent on wanting Nioh 3, to the point that you are ignoring what -is- there.
I guess keeping things short leads to this type of response.
Stats are effectively the same for all weapons and armor. You only increase the damage/defense by leveling up. No need to work around new items you find. They will have the same stats.
You don't even have to look what stats the new item has. You can just craft it on your current items anyway. This makes having a loot of drops obsolete.
I use martial arts and spells but given the aggressove nature of bosses you have the same issue as regular attacks. I thought that much was clear to someone who actually played the game and didnt go into detail there.
You also completely ignored the main point of the paragraph. Take Sekiro for example. Yes, light attacks don't do much. But you need to apply these to keep the pressure up. You also can play aggressively because you cancel into deflect. Now compare this to Wo Long. Any attack, martial arts, spell, or whatever will lock you into an animation. Eating a hit because of that adds positive energy for the boss - reducing what damage you already did to the bar. What's the result to that? Playing passively and just waiting for the enemy to attack. Depending on the enemy you can get single attacks or even martial arts in after a deflected critical. But that's really it.
The system just doesn't work for an aggressive style. On top of that it might even punish you even harder because you lose morale if you miss a deflect on critical. All in all it just promotes passiveness.
Not going to spend time on the other stuff you mentioned.
The main problem with Wo Long on PC is how horrible the port is. I could deal with dysfunctional KBM support in Dark Souls, a game released in 2012, where a modder had to fix it but this is not acceptable in 2023.
Wo Long has horrible technical performance that causes FPS to fluctuate wildly even on very powerful PCs. It certainly does not help the game looks like something released in 2017 on previous console generation. The game looks outright hideous even on highest settings and 4K. Nioh Collection, which is remaster of both Nioh games for current generation consoles and PCs looks better than Wo Long. Both games also run much better.
The above are objective issues justify negative reviews. PC ports lately are horrible, Koei Tecmo is one of publishers that is clearly seeing PC as a side-project to get few more bucks out of the game. PC players should not accept this approach and negative reviews are one way to let them know.
I personally play this game on Game Pass and considering how poor the game runs and how it mimic Sekiro more than Nioh games, I will not be buying it for my PS5 or Steam.
