You have to basically do the same thing. Parry and dodge the normal attacks, parry the red attacks. Parry the grab twice to get him to 1/2 health and then you can summon and win the fight. Phase 2 isn't too bad once you get the parry timing down.
if you look at their spirit guage, when you're deflecting the big red attacks, you're reducing their maximum bar and therefore the amount you have to reduce their overall spirit to trigger your own special attack against him and other bosses. your heavy attacks/spirit attacks do the same thing, but smaller so it's less noticeable.
i fought him in the demo, on game pass, and then again when the game launched. i hate him and think he should have been switched with the second boss. by that time, you're given so many more options to deal with bosses in general. the second boss is objectively easier than him and becomes a regular enemy later on, too. should've been the first boss.
Nah, polearm is a lot better. It deals way more spirit damage, more regular damage, and has a lot more reach making it much easier to keep hitting him.
all of his moves can be blocked (except the red ones, of course) and you can punish his 'thrust' easily for spirit regain.
block, be opportunistic and wait to parry his charged attack, he will be staggered and pulled towards you.
repeat until you get the button prompt for auto-win : )
