attack relentlessly on the first phase to keep him stun locked or blocking, and parry the red attacks, remember to use your martial arts attack because it does big ki damage

on the second phase, bait out his long thrusting red attack by remaining at mid range, and parry it for massive stance damage then follow up with spirit attack and maybe a fireball if you have time for it, it only takes a few of these thrusting attack counters to kill him

Was beatable at level 6-7 once I learned the fight. I suggest doing the same instead of brute forcing it with stats. He's there to teach you how to play, after all.

Yeah phase 1, be aggressive, spam quick attacks. If he starts blocking, break through with a spirit attack. I recommend doing a spirit attack close to or after your quick attack string once you've some spirit built up (that way the spirit attack will deal more damage). Watch out for his red attack, maintain the pressure but keep an eye out for it. If he does that, parry it. Sometimes he can follow up with more so be wary. Bring his spirit to the lowest then you can do a "takedown" on him for massive damage. Rinse repeat. Sometimes he disengages and does a jumping attack that's easy to parry but the timing might be slower than you thought at first.

Phase 2 is different. Rushing him down won't work any more because he doesn't flinch when you hit him. Instead stay farther away and block most of his stuff. Attack him during his recovery after his moves to regain the lost spirit before you get hit again to not get stance broken. Then parry the red attacks and punish. Only go crazy on him once his stance broke. Be ready to use your spirit animal thing once your partner tells you to "use the jade" or whatever. It's triangle+circle or Y+B on a PS or XBox pad by default.

If you still need tips, the game has a tutorial/glossary menu with a bunch of them.

In the second phase, watch out for the NPC boy. After a certain point he'll say something like use your power and in that moment you gotta use your guardian spirit and the cut scene enters. You don't have to properly beat the second phase. Get him down to quarter health and something and it is done.

Thanks for the input help. after struggling against him for a while I had an amazing run where I owned him and go to the jade part with no direction on how to activate. and died trying to. Lame as hell

Yw! Yeah, that part of the game is weird. They tell you how to use that shortly AFTER you had to use it. Maybe the levels are out of order? Who knows but it seems like an oversight.

literally just block and parry the special attacks, there is no point in trying to dodge or using skills and spells. spam normal attack to recover spirit

You can cheese the game by farming the zombies for elixirs a little earlier, you can get your morale up to 25 for 1 pull.
