MONSTER HUNTER RISE

MONSTER HUNTER RISE

What weapon should I main?
I played greatsword in world but want to try something else. I want something fun and feels impactful, I'm thinking the longsword since the counter gameplay seems kinda fun but I'm pretty bad at the game. The greatsword felt really impactful but I won't really play enough to fully understand every monsters movements to truly enjoy it. Opinions on what I should go?

Have you considered Gunlance ? Plenty of protection to keep it safe and some great boom boom effects + a nice explosion

You could also try the Chargeblade. It's a bit "technical", but the gameplay has lots of variety and you still have a shield option.

But regarding your concerns over countering, you don't need to "know every move of the monster" to counter properly IMO. Particularly LS who has quite generous counter window.
And you can always use the talent Evade Extension to have an even greater parry window.

You can also play heavy/light bowgun. By using traps and CC, it's pretty fun to drop mass clusters on some helpless Rathalos. It's a bit ressource intensive though (Traps + all types of ammo to buy/craft).

I'd advise you to try the LS anyway. if it doesn't work, consider the following :

- Gunlance is safe and has explosions, a bit repetitive.
- Chargeblade is more technical, has more variety, still some counter.
- Bowguns are self explanatory.

I would recommend then against hammer/HuntingHorn/DualBlades/SwitchAxe/insectglaive etc because they have less defensive moves afaik, so it's relying more on knowing the monsters patterns etc.

But I gladly let other Hunters correct me on that last point. I never really dug in Hammer/HH etc.

Dual blades has its adept dodge skill, which is, imo, better safety wise then anything longsword has, and it has a short cool down.

Switch axe has burst counter in sunbreak, and in base game invincible gambit. Neither are necessary when you have a point or two of evade extender, which will give you all the mobility you need.

GS in MHW means that using Hammer in MHRise Sunbreak is my recommendation.

Hammer is great since the addition of Strength mode; in the late late late game I switched to lance though cuz, frankly, my hands were cramping

I recommend the Sword and Shield! It's an extremely versatile weapon that allows you to use consumables without putting the weapon away, it's fast, has good blocking, has fluid combos/movement, and has slash and blunt damage.

Try other weapons too, the important thing is that you like it and have fun! :mhwhappy:

Switchaxe has a smooth learning curve and feels really rewarding once you learn to play it to its strengths. It might feel clunky at first, but if you're looking to main a weapon, that's my pick. Other than that I think you can't really know what clicks unless you try it.
I never got into Insect glaive in World, but I got hooked on it in Rise, even though on paper it's the opposite of what I like.

I can vouch for Gunlance (and lance as well, you become a god), as well as swagaxe. Hammer is fun as well.
Bowguns, expecially light bowgun turn MH into point and click adventure game until you're half way though master rank :)

Hammer

Easy to play, big numbers like the greatsword and high stun damage

Gunlance is really awesome in Rise, along with Switch Axe. Give em a shot!

I found the new Combos for Gunlance messed up my rhythm too much... can't remember if they changed in World or in Rise though, I know it was the old way in Generations
