Was MH Rise made for kids ?
No bait here, I'm not trying to prokoke tilt and salt. With that out the way here's where I'm coming from.

First launch of the game and you arrive on the menu with a subjectively obnoxious and frankly quite cringy song of caricatural manga teenaged girl singing.
It sounds like some kind of song you'd find in a fairy tale cartoon movie for kids.
So alright, I could understand why it appeals to some younger persons or general weebs but still it's a weird choice to make when the series has one the most legendary OST in all of gaming (proof of a hero) or at least a very competent sound design team for their other games.

Then you get in the village and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cringe theme continues non-stop.
Well after some research I figured I could change the village background song so we're good. But again weird choice to make (I mean are there really people that play with this song always in the background and not going mad ?).

Now I discover the abysmal dubbing of the english voices (feels like they talk to a 5 year old/ to their pet/ to a mentally impared person).
So I switch to "monster hunter voices" expecting the classic MH experience where the character basically shut up and just grunt when they're not in a cutscene but nah it basically became the sims.
So I switch to japanese as a last resort and get what I expected, which is just cringy japanese stuff.
Well why not but still, except for a kid/teenager/ extremely weeb demographic I don't quite get how this is enjoyable for a grown ass human being.

I decide to eat before going into my first quest, and while the MH games usually have some kind of fun cutscene, we now have a litteral KID SONG with a little girl serving as a mascot. Yes it is skippable but again, weird direction to take.

Then there's the fact that all character are written to be the weebest out of all other MH games hands down.
I get that Rise is based on some kind of caricatural fantasy japanese culture but I find it really impacts the overall experience for a grown ass person.

Just to be clear : the game is good, it's a MH you can't really go wrong with such a solid base. But it really feels like the game was destined to a younger player base than usual.

Is it just me and I have missed something?

PS : I missed some point I wanted to make but I'm too lazy to write more than that sorry ^^'

Opinion: One of my favourite things about Monster Hunter is how up beat the games are. The ridiculous voice lines really add to that charm. It's cheesy, but it's always happy and positive. This isn't new to Rise, it's been in all of them. When a monster comes along the two little kids get ready to fight it and express their desire to kill it; rather than reprimand the children for putting themselves in a dangerous position, the chief just laughs and says: "That's the spirit! ... But no, we'll let HunterMcHuntsALot deal with 'em."

I love it. Contrast that with all the boring over-done depressing games, shows and stories that have recently been popular. I'm sick of the depressing stories. I'm sick of all the woe is me characters. Even Halo pissed me off with their whingy selfish cowardly Spanish guy side-kick. I want some positivity. And I want games that aren't all 'shades of grey'. We have good guys and we have monsters that need stopping. If you are a hippy you can capture them I suppose, but there's no doubt in anyone's mind that our hero is a good guy. He's not an anti-hero, he's not complicated, he's not got a dark side, he's not riddled with self-doubt and depression. He just grins and grunts and smacks big bastards about. I love it.

Games that are serious, depressing and morally dubious are not 'adult', they are degenerate. Games that are cheesy, upbeat and featuring morally pure characters are not 'childish'; they are wholesome.

I think you're digging a little too much. It's just different theme direction for a different region of the overall Monster Hunter world.

rise : has fluff and charm that monster hunter has literally always had

must be a kids game.
Kurobon Jan 16, 2022 @ 10:39am
Did the cartoon cats dancing around to silly songs with kids voices hint you regarding this being a kids game? Or was it the colonizing endevour of murdering anything that breathes without any cause, and then chop em' up to make cute clothes and weapons?

TBH, World was the only game I could think of that wasnt up beat or peppy or anything. It was very monotone and drab.

If this really isn't bait or whatever, like half the posts on this forum, i'll answer you seriously.

I think this is mostly just you not liking the whole Japanese, or at least Asian aesthetic.
Most other people are fine with it. I think there was an option to play voiceless in character creation, if that bothers you-- don't quote me on that, though.

Age has nothing to do with whether you like a certain kind of aesthetic or not, though it does somewhat affect your hobbies and likes/dislikes.

I don't like the dango song, either, I can agree with this, but I know several people who quite adore it(and even sing along to it...).

World was always the more unique take to MH-- MH always had games leaning toward the adult, but quirky themes leaning more to a kid/teen. The characters have always been weird, never meant to be taken seriously. Cooking has always been expressed in a comical way, no matter which MH game.

Honestly, i'll say it again-- this is just you not liking the Japanese/Eastern/Asian Aesthetic. It has nothing to do with the rest of Rise in general, since, as you stated, Rise is still a good game.

Maybe you didn't touch Generations/Generations Ultimate, because that game's pretty """childish""" as well-- the ending credits for low rank literally being a concert with a girl and her posse singing.

Good points, I guess It's all about perspective in the end :)

It just feels like every MH game but in a different, more traditional Japanese setting.
vaanomega Jan 16, 2022 @ 10:47am
The OP is spitting so much on Japanese culture, it makes you wonder if he is not racist

Hmm yeah I guess you're right. I played the first 3 Mh, then world so I don't really use it as a reference point and I just felt a huge difference between the first games, world and then Rise, but I guess it's just me not following the evolution of MH enough.
As for the whole japanese aesthetic thing ye you're right on that too.
Ditto Jan 16, 2022 @ 10:48am
I must say while I enjoy the game I truely hate the cooking scene. The song is so cringe and the cutscene does nothing to help.

What happened to the epic giant feast cooking scenes from older MHs? Whenever I ate a meal in World it looked damn good.

Only other critique I have is my character talking everytime I do something. Gather a plant "whaaaaat's thiiiiiiissss?" carve a monster "now for the messy part". Once in a while? Fine. Every freaking time? ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥...This one is probably on me for picking their voice which turned out to be annoying but thankfully you can turn down/off character voices.
