Who asked for difficult combat in a Trine game?!
I'm baffled by the developers' highlighting how much harder they've aimed to make the combat and boss fights in Trine 5. Who wants that? I always viewed the combat in Trine as mostly an annoyance to get through so I could proceed with the real game. Was there really a clamor among fans to change the focus to make Trine more of a hack and slash action game?

Me. Next question.

It's puzzle based, teamplay game, at least you struggle with fights a bit so that you feel the game, harder combat would be cool, it's not that hard as Cuphead though, so it's all good.

We've done different difficulty settings for puzzles, combat and resurrection. So if you feel like focusing on puzzles and enjoying the views and story, you can e.g. put combat on easy and it will not be difficult.

At the same time you can also have e.g. puzzles on hard, so the difficulty of the game is customizable in those three separate areas, to your personal preference.

Bossfights are a bit of a mix between puzzles, platforming and combat, so they require a bit of everything and tend to have several phases.

All in for increased difficulty and better combat as well. And since it's optional, that's even better.

If it's designed with hard combat as the central feature, the option to turn off hard combat just means you're basically gimping the game and giving yourself a fundamentally inferior and incomplete experience. Hard pass for me if they stick to this new approach.

I'm not going to judge so far from release but I will throw out there that I am sick of the 'hard for the sake of being hard' soulslike bandwagon many games go on. I'm sick of promising games being so hard I have to walk away and give up on. I want to have fun, not 'git gud' and there's nothing wrong with that. For me challenges are reserved for replays on a higher difficulty level, not a first playthrough.

I agree. I've been playing computer games since 1984 on an Apple II. Back then computer games weren't about gatekeeping with this "git gud" concept.
:') It's not necessarily "designed around hard combat" so much as it is changing up the way combat plays. One of my few sticking points with Trine 4 was that combat was always on a very constrained stage of floating platforms and routine performances, whereas Trine 5 is angling more towards open stages and puzzle-like boss fights - you can see hints of that puzzle-oriented fighting in the trailer around the one minute-mark and the first promotional screenshot (both of the tall snaky robot thing).

Um, Trine 1 & 2 had different levels of difficulty. This brings it back, with I guess more control over the settings then before.

100% agree.

100% agree! I'm playing and very close to the end of Evil Within 2 on GoG right now, and it's a great game overall, but as in so many games these days, the friggin boss fights are a real negative compared to the bulk of the moment by moment gameplay. Why do so many games have to have these tedious, pointlessly difficult boss fights just because a bunch of masochists bought a lot of copies of Dark Souls? Let the masochists keep playing Dark Souls clones, and leave the rest of us out of it. As for Trine, I also thought combat in earlier Trine games nothing more than an annoying distraction from what I actully liked about the games. Every time I entered a new area and a bunch of enemies popped up, I just sort of sighed and said 'OK, just have to grit my teeth and get through this annoyance so I can get back to the real game.'

You people are so melodramatic. How many times do the devs have to say the game has difficulty settings? Just play on easy mode.

Also, Dark Souls is nowhere near as hard as it's been portrayed. Not even on Ninja Gaiden's level.

I don't get why all the whining about this matter.
A lot of people like a true challenge, and the feeling of surpasing it, me including.
Thats why Souls games became so famous in the last decade. They don't hold your hands and they let you feel every victory you get.

For those who dislike it, just play in the dumb difficulty. You will have the option to choose. It's not like someone having a gun pointing to your head saying you should play on hard difficulty.

Also, i really appreciate that devs are putting their efforts to deliver challenging experiences for those who want.

Nobody here said that souls-like games should be easier. What we are saying is that Trine games ARE NOT souls-like and do NOT need to be. Not everything has to have impossible combat. We want what trine is all about: puzzle platforming. It is NOT about combat. Dumb difficulty would be to have difficult combat but easy puzzling. That IS dumb. Not the other way around.
Thanks to this gIT Gud cult now many games that are NOT about combat are tryind to put something for them and we fear that they forget their own essence. Let other type of players enjoy other type of games and get back to your souls-like dumbning games.

I had assumed that very few people played the Trine games because they love the combat and want more focus on harder combat. I really enjoyed the earlier Trine games because of the puzzles, the figuring out how to use the different skills of the characters to progress throught the game and get to the more challenging to reach areas with bonus items, and, actually, maybe most so because of the writing and characters and story. There are thousands of barely distinguishable, mostly mediocre at best 2D hack and slash action/platform games on Steam. Can't understand why the developers sound like they want to move Trine in the direction of being yet another one of those mediocrities instead of building on their own unique strengths.

Very well put out, couldn't explain it better.
The topic of your thread is exactly this. I don't have any business going to souls games asking for easier gameplay, (and I don't really want anyway) as others don't have any business asking to change the essence of games for the sake of their own desires.
The beauty of having a ton of types of games is exactly that, there is games for any type of person.
With that said I really trust what devs have for us, and of course I don't mind the combat with different difficulties AS LONG AS the essence of Trine games do not suffer with it.
