[MOD] More Visible Pointers
Since a lot of people are complaining about the barely visible aiming cursor in battle, including some with actual eyesight issue that were unable to play, I made a tiny mod to try and alleviate that issue.

MVP comes in two versions: a "mild" option that only changes the main pointer but keeps the original icons for the individual guns, and a "strong" version that affects both. In both versions, guns loaded with special ammo are still more visible than regular ones to keep the original intent. As expected it does make the game somewhat easier, although one could argue it was a very blunt and artificial way to make the battles more difficult.

You can see both options here[i.imgur.com]

Unzip the archive in your [ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ HighFleet ] folder and it will overwrite two [ Midground2.png ] and [ Midground2.res ] files in [ HighFleet \ Media \ Tex ]. The archive also contains a backup of the original [ .res ] file if you want to revert to the vanilla cursor, as well as two other folders with the [ .res ] file for any version of the mod you want to use. By default the mild version will be installed.

BEWARE The game does not have any modding support (yet?) and this mod overwrites the original game files. If you run into issues, you should right click on the game in your library then do [ Properties / Local Files / Verify integrity of game files ] to revert all changes.

Enjoy making accurate shots!

Big thanks to JerryBear that explained the solution in this thread.

OH THANK GOD.

Its great to see that a community fixing some of the flaws in this game has popped up so fast.

Just got it installed. This has easily made the game 200% more enjoyable for me.

Thanks for posting this!

As always your mods are great, thankyou!

Great to see the modding community active already.

But I don't know if I'm just not far enough into the game for this to be an issue but I kinda like it the way it is right now, the HUD glitches do annoy me a lot more, but aiming is not a problem for me except when there's a big explosion right on my face, and it makes me feel like it's more realistic, it would be hard to aim through all of that smoke

Thats the beauty of mods, if you want to leave it as is, thats great!

Personally, I prefer being able to actually have some idea of where my guns are aiming, especially when piloting a big ship with a lot of guns and armor. Firing off several different types of guns at once its good to see which general direction they will go...

I can see both points myself. On the one hand, the vanilla pointer does make the battles hectic with pot-shots firing in all directions in a very cinematic dakka fest. On the other hand, it is just one among many frustrating things the UI does for the sake of increasing the difficulty.

The tipping point to me was the fact that you need a good situational awareness to survive, you need to carefully gauge the target movements to lead your shots, but then the tiny turret icon forces you to look back at your ship to actually take aim. That goes completely against the flow of the battle, and why a bigger icon you can more easily discern helps a lot in that regard.

In the end, this is the kind of things that is best suited for a mod: you had an issue with those pointers? This is probably a suitable fix. You like the original? Keep it! We don't need to ask the dev to change what they felt was best for their game.

Wow, one of my favorite Starsector modders is now making mods for my new favorite game. This is just great! Looking forward to seeing what else you might cook up. Hope they'll add mod support soon.

Great work!
Looks like you can not only "buy" a decent reticle, but also an armored windglass. How to disable bulletholes:

Good work on those two mods. I'm tempted but I think they'd take all the challenge out of that part of the game for me. Combat is a little too easy as it is (I think).
