I'm not sure about the stump, but trees grow all over my farm constantly without me planting any. So you're not going to run out.

There was a thread a few days ago about tree regrowth.

According to the posters in that thread, if you leave a stump while playing in a multiplayer game a tree will regrow, but that it doesn't work in SP. Or maybe it's the other way around. Since you haven't bothered using the search function I can't imagine why I should either.

At any rate, iirc there was a bit of a consensus or at least someone posted who seemed certain. I'm sure if you use the search function you'll find not only that thread but probably others as well.

Trees grow back so fast, just cut down whatever you want, if you want them in a certain place you can collect/buy tree seeds and plant them.

Trees spawn in and grow both on your farm and in the wild. However they don't regrow to quite the starting quantity. I like to leave the wild trees where they are for silk/shrooms and have a logging tree farm on the farm.

I always leave the stumps in Exploration zones and the trees almost always regrow the next 1-3 days. I dont know how the timer works but certainly much faster then felling it completely.
