Favourite and Least favourite NPC? Based on first impressions.

Warning: I'm going to come off incredibly negative here, just like the NPC's in this game I'm complaining about, I just felt like complaining XD. I'm Scottish, complaining is our national pass time. If you don't want to read to a post of mostly complaining, skip my post, I won't mind, I hope you have a lovely day regardless. I'll post ones I like at the bottom.

I imagine most NPC's in this game get likeable over time. But what is my incentive to actually keep interacting with half of them? I could just tell them the things they want to hear... but some of it is particularly terrible. A big issue with this game is you're given two dialogue choices, one is "More hearts" the other is "less hearts", which would be fine. But sometimes it's like. "I love this thing!" or "I hate this thing" it can never be somewhere in the middle, you have to either love it, or hate it. It'd be nice if there was a dialogue option for just being in the middle.

Now for my complaining:

I thought it started well with Lynn, just tell her to follow her own path in life, be cool, encourage freedom, down with tradition... No, she wants to do the job she doesn't like very much... Okay, that's lame.

Then Miyeon, basically a copy of Lynn but she has wings, so that's a write off.
That's fair, you're not going to like every NPC in a game... Except unlike Lynn, who's mother seems nice enough from the opening. Miyeon's parents are trash. Just trash, just throw them out, get new ones.

But then I go around town and... most NPC's start off as nasty. They take potentially friendly comments as massive insults and just get mad at you, causing you to lose hearts.
Honestly, communicating with these people is just not worth doing.

Anne, just capitalism. Which is already very unlikeable, if you tell her it's bad to judge a town based on how much money she can make from it, she gets mad at you for assuming she's doing that... she is literally doing that...

Kitty... Nya! At first I thought she was joking... No, she is not joking... I gave her some fish since she's very heavily catty, but she seems to hate every fish I give her. Despite that, every quest results in her giving me fish... Guess she wants rid of all the ones I've given her.

Claude: insanely cringe, typical edgelord vampire... but lives in a place called SUN haven. He forgot the most well known trait about vampires. Maybe he sparkles?

Nathaniel: Cute, but too militaristic.
Roza: Complaining that Nathaniel has a room to himself, I say that she should, and she goes "That is not how the military works, FARMER!" Like... Farmer has a name, don't have to be a turnip about it, I was just trying to be nice. Next time I'll tell you to sleep on the floor.

Shang: He's new, but he starts off as a total bell. He does get better over time, as I imagine most of them do. But he starts off as a total elitist who just wants you to get out of his way, as he walks around the docks not doing anything. So I feel a want to ignore him.

The Librarian... I got a quest from the dragon who owns this town, and she's like "Nah, no book for you, go get some delicate gloves to reach the 4 lines of illegible text." then you have to go get a stone to rub on the book, but the stone doesn't need to wear gloves, obviously. Stupid. The librarian can stick her books up... Just no books for me.
She later goes all British museum over the book she can't actually read. Telling you that you can't take it to it's real owners. Just let me take my sword out and... Sigh.


Then, potential spoilers for withergate:
You get to a town full of monsters... And unfortunately, their personalities are the worst. You either worship Darius, or he hates you, and I mean worship. For Xyla you have to like when she insults you... And they start off by forcing you to crawl through the sewers... Why would I ever want to be nice to these people? Am I missing something? I wouldn't even want to fake it. They shouldn't get positive reinforcements on their behaviour.

Potential spoilers for Nel'vari:
You get there, there's a lovely old man, very friendly, likeable even gives you another farm (Too many of those, appreciate the thought, but just not for me. Gimme some sprinklers to automate this, my memory cannot cope) But the old man isn't dateable, I get it... he's old... but I don't care, he's lovely so far... Oh well, he has a friend, who I can date... But his friend is just a ♥♥♥♥. Not even remotely likeable, just another NPC who's a bit of a nob.

I do like some NPC's, Kai was nice, sleepy snake guy on the beach, a bit confused but adorable.
Catherine, basically willow from Buffy, but with rabbit ears and spends her free time gardening. No arguments here so far.
Lucia, a bit up herself, but positively. Just set things on fire and she'll warm up to you.
Liam, he's nice and cute, just a shame he's called Liam, terrible name. (I've met a lot of awful Liam's, if you're called Liam, no offence, I'm sure you're lovely. Just a bias)
Vivi: I've not met this one yet, but the lack of a wizard hat was disappointing, but she seems likeable enough so far, from what a friend has told me.
Peter: Nice enough, bit boring, seems to be dating the librarian, c'mon Pete, you can do better.
Tonya: Again, you can do better, dump your husband and date me instead, you have lovely hair.

I didn't mention everyone, some people are a bit boring, or I just haven't interacted with them yet.

I cannot even pretend to come close to the level of detail your post has. So I will instead provide my brief impressions on my least liked/favourite npcs:

Lynn's introduction may come off in good intention by the dev team but it really brushed me the wrong way. Her development is predictable but then again that may be the intention of her character. It's just the npc version of the player. Someone moving in, to do their task and improve. She gets some characterization and background, however scant as it is. Unfortunately I feel this is similar for a lot of characters. I wish they had more dialogue based on location / season. Probably too much work to do given the amount of characters and having to get the game come out in full. Something I hope is given some attention in the future. Regardless, it's a serviceable feature that doesn't go too much or too little.

My favourite character has to be Vivi. She came out of nowhere with a rather funny cutscene. Though I have a softspot for clumsy characters. The attention put into her sprite as she tries to attack the player was a great touch too, and the tent and details around her character are pretty fun too. The usual jabs at suggesting how she's going to claim your bounty are amusing as well. More than once she lightened up my day whenever I ran into her.

There's a bunch of characters I just like. Most of Withergate are what you'd expect and do not simply just open up as friendly when you try. Though I feel that is due to how npcs in general just got less attention than the bachelors/ettes. Pretty fun game with a LOT of npc's I find myself enjoying. Which is impressive given how many there are overall.

Hate Lynn though, really do.

edit: Actually I was wrong. I just remembered Catherine exists. I do not even have words for Catherine. From dialogue to demeanor. She is beyond infuriating. Lynn is like a stale incense stick compared to her.

I mostly agree with your first point, though they really should have written more dialogue.

I've not seen Vivi yet, but from what I hear, she sounds adorable in her clumsiness, I too have a weakness for that. The tent... Oh, so she owns the "messy tent nobody would want to live in"? That tent is beautiful, I care not for the developers comment about nobody wanting to live in, a bit of cleaning and it'd be wonderful!

I feel the issue with withergate, is they start conversations off seeing you as an outsider... the problem with that, is that every other NPC kinda does the same thing. They all start off with you seeing you in a negative light. Like having 0 hearts isn't just starting off, but it's starting off as an enemy.

I fear I'm going to have to interact with Catherine more and see why people hate her. I thought she was lovely, but it's possible I'm wrong, it sounds like she's all but unanimously disliked.

Oh don't be influenced by my feelings. I am certain she is a lovely person. She's jus tthe type of person I would rather avoid by throwing salt and pepper at their faces.

I agree, that tent is beautiful. Maybe if it were run down prior to Vivi's arrival then I would understand the underhanded comment at it.

Indeed, the tent itself looks lovely. Though, this game often gets updated in many surprise ways, maybe some day they'll make the tent actually match the description...

But then maybe some day, they'll add some more likeable NPCs... So far I'm thinking... Kai is nice. Aaand that's about it.

I just got the game recently and I haven't gotten to Wintergate yet story wise (just finished Ne'Vari). I have briefly met Xyla, Darius, and . . . Donovan right? It was at those Holiday events. I haven't heard nor seen a Vivi yet, I guess she's part of the main story though right . . . *thinks* Wait a minute. *looks something up* I have seen her image! Lol. Just don't know where.

ANYWAY, based on first impression of who I have met so far, I am going to just stick with the Marriage candidates since I only interact with other NPCs if I have to, like when I do those commissions and quests.

Least Fav- Xyla- Based on the few interactions I've had with her, she's giving me Female Tsundere vibes, and unlike Male Tsuns, generally they don't have a good reason for being that way. FYI I am a 100% straight female, I tend to be more critical of those of my own gender lol. I'll say this, her competitive nature was funny to see at that Hot dog eating event (that whole event was funny lol). Here's hoping my opinion of her changes.

Most disappointing- Wormhort (sp?)- He had one of my fav designs and it was nice to have an attractive doctor, but he's so 1 note, even after learning his backstory. Still a nice guy, but he's too similar to Jun (who is romantic at least).

Fav- Claude- Out of designs, I found his to be the most attractive (I have a thing for blondes), and right off the bat, I found myself drawn to him because he does have that mysterious demeanor that I love in a guy. Like my jaw also dropped seeing his Summer attire. I am like 99% sure he's going to be the one I marry. I know Divorce is an option in this game, but being the empathic person that I am, it would hurt ME too much to do that to someone.

Most potential- Shang- Omg, I love this guy's look too. Yeah he's rude off of the bat, so yeah it wasn't great. But I will say at least he's improving lol. I haven't had a date with him yet (I have a feeling that won't happen until after the main story ends because I have over 5 hearts now), but yeah great potential!

Overall I am really enjoying this game and the chars. I just checked and I have 47 hours in lol and I've only had this game for a little over 2 weeks haha.

Hmm... my dislike romanceable character list should be

- Kai - , most of my dislike about him is character design that quit off for me
.he has 4 arms. that made it very......weird. I'm mostly ignore him so idk what his personality.

- Wesley - A totally JERK and RUDE personality , I'm not masochism enough to endure his attitude until he'll open up to player, so I'll stay away from him. bye :p

- Xyla - snobbish mean girl type aren't my liking , and yes she's insulting you.

- Miyeon- A miss perfect wanna be, she seem pathetic for not stand for herself that made me a bit annoying of her damsel in distress attitude. plus her parent are made it worst. Ellios kick them out of Sun Heaven, please

- Anne - same as Xyla, but at least she isn't rude compare to her.

-Kitty- I'm not dislike her personality, just a little bit cringe at her " Nya " in almost every sentence.

and my favorite romaceable character list

- Nathaniel - Cute and little silly guy, but his character are a bit too bland for me.

- Darius - Well, his attitude could be bad at start. but he is easy to please when rub on his ego XD he's cute in his way

- Donovan - A big Puppy! BIG CUTIE MUST HUG!!

- Shang - He can be rude at start, but he'll get better attitude toward us every time.
Currently he's my most favorite. [ plus. his summer outfit are sexy XD]

I believe Kai has 4 arms because of something in his history, but I've not interacted with him much. I think it's a shame that the one Naga you meet, isn't similar to player Naga's. The race doesn't get much representation in the game, which makes me wonder if they're going to add anything relevant to them and elementals.

Xyla and Darius are totally nasty, Xyla is growing on me, she likes Purrmaids, and I like the punky look. But Darius I just cannot like, he treats me like a peon, while he lords around, and I've never been a fan of monarchies (I'm Scottish, down with the monarchy!)

Kitty I agree on, just cringe.

Miyeon is basically just a rehash of Lynn, they have the exact same personality. "My parents are making me do something I don't want to, but don't tell me to seek my own thing in life, or I will be angry with you." Both are trash.

I agree with you on Donovan, he's a bit of a derp, but friendly... He also likes gravy, relatable.

Shang as well, yes, I disliked him at first... but he apologises and tries to be more likeable. Apologies go a long way. <3

By all means, rant! No matter how pointless, it's why I made this thread in the first place. XD

P.s. I picked up Amanda's glasses and stuck them in a chest. She doesn't deserve them back.

Quick question because I want to be absolutely sure, there are no consequences in dating multiple people right? I've finally finished the main story (it had me laughing in the end which is a good thing). I've decided who I'll be dating, but I want to be sure there's no negative consequences. Like say whoever you marry, there will be no hard feelings with the others you romance. Based on interactions, these are the ones I want to romance (mostly out of curiosity)-

Jun- He's too sweet and is a bit of flirt, which surprised me.
Claude- He's still #1 in my book. That conversation in our 2nd date had me going gaga.
Shang- I've yet to have a date with this guy despite being at 10 Hearts. He's still ranking #2 in my book.
Vaan- Definitely the biggest flirt in the game, but I really enjoy conversing with him.
Donovan- No plans to marry this guy (his lifestyle doesn't jell with mine), but omg, he IS so fun lol.
Darius- Yeah he is very arrogant and starts out as a jerk, but at the same time, I can't fully judge him on how he was raised too since his kind's been rejected in the past. I definitely don't mind being submissive around him and I like his possessive nature.

Far as I'm aware, you can date everyone, but only marry one. Which bothers some polyamorous friends of mine. D=
Personally, for IRL reasons, I tend to avoid romance(Which means I lose out on OP rings, totally unfair, but whatever). So I'm not sure what happens if you marry someone but continue dating others. A friend tells me you can date everyone to 15 hearts, but only marry one, and it'll be fine.
