Moving Farm Animals/Pets?

I placed one cow outside of the barn, as I stupidly assumed it would simply go in and out on it's own (like they do in Stardew). Now I cannot figure out how to move it. On top of that, I placed a pet in my house to roam around freely, now when I try and upgrade the house it will not let me "because there is a pet inside." How can I fix this?

click slightly right and below the animal to pick it up again.

or get a collar and use it on the animal and have it follow you, take it outside and de-collar it
