you place an auto feeder+ a feeder for every animal if outside or place the feeder in your barn.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocOb9igb6lI
a little outdated, but a good start
There is a visual queue on the sides of the barn where hay will fill up if food is in them. They don't eat them right away if you had none, sleep for the day and see if they ate the next day.
I had the whole setup correct from the start, but only the cows wouldn't eat during that time while the chickens would.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I dont use barns, I have the animals outside because barns are useless :D. The auto feeder must be on the same map as the manual ones.
They literally increase your capacity for more animals....yeah....very "useless".
Also yeah, autofeeder confused me too. Because the name is wrong. It's autofiller, not autofeeder.
