How long does it take for a house to upgrade?

I bought the permit thingy, crafted the upgrade and used it. But even after three days the interior is as small as before. How long does it take for it to get bigger?

It should be instantaneous, can you give a bit more of an in-depth explanation of how you used it?

You have to build a certain crafting station and use the permit in a blueprint first. Then you use the blueprint to instantly upgrade your house to the next tier.

It is instant when you use the upgrade on the house. You will see it when you click the house.

Build the construction bench, buy the permit, craft the upgrade on the bench then put the upgrade in your hotbar, highlight it and left click your house to upgrade it.

2) went back to my farm, set up the construction table and started crafting the tier 2 upgrade
3) the next day I went back to the construction table, picked up the finished upgrade
4) dragged the upgrade to the action bar and then left-clicked
5) the upgrade item is gone, I went inside the house but nothing changed

Did the exterior appearance of the house change? the tier two upgrade doesn't make a huge difference to the interior but it should at least have added a room to the left. If neither of those changes happened it really does sound like a bug.

I don't have any before screenshot but I did think the exterior changed but thought my mind was playing tricks on me as the season also had changed to autumn.
however there is no room to the left :(
