Moving between multiplayer and single player as host?

I am hosting a multiplayer world, with a character who has only ever been used in that exact world. My friends are able to go between that multiplayer world and their own single-player worlds with the same characters but without the crops, farm buildings, and devices.

Does anyone know if loading up my character in single-player mode will progress the multiplayer world?

The world is tied to your character. If you go to the character loading screen you will notice that the amount of gold, mana orbs and tickets will be the same as in your multiplayer game because of this. You will progress the world your teammates have been playing on.

This is still very frustrating. I didn't realize that hosting the multiplayer game meant I wouldn't be able to use that character single-player without affecting the multiplayer world.

There isn't really a "multiplayer world". It's a single player world that you let other people use sometimes.
