Is Pen Pall skill useless?

Is there a hidden benefit like raising heart levels? So far I've only received some letters so I'm wondering if it's just a "extra lore" mechanic or does it have some other use?

Yes, I've got reward from Bernard with the last letter.
Other than that, it's lore and a couple of side quests.

I think this and "letters from the forest creatures" are late game perks, just for fun.

Pen Pal gives you a passive item for community tokens every morning when you get the last letter. Forest creature I think unlocks Snackoons for you to use in the barn (I got a free one + they started selling them at the animal store).
