Fruit trees and spacing

Just thought I'd ask this before committing to my ambitions of being an orchard farmer. Do fruit trees need to be a certain distance apart like they do in Stardew Valley?

I'd rather not plant a bunch of expensive trees only to later find out that I put them too close to one another.

you can plant them without worry even if you dont like it you can cut them down and get your seed for it back

I think for optimal growth it's half spacing left to right and two spaces up and down.
Each tree is two cubes of 9 wide. You can only move 1 cube at a time in any direction.
Not 100% sure but when I clumped a bunch of oak together tightly they seemed to grow at different rates, some very slow.

I kinda just lined mine side by side with enough space for my character to run through the middle. I think you can even place them bumper to bumper and they would still be fine. With the mod that removes the shake animation, it's like instant harvest when I stand between them.
