A Lack of Crossbow Manufacturing?

Am I correct in understanding that you cannot craft crossbows, only purchase them? If so, what the hell? You can craft tools, you can craft swords and armour, why make the ranged option for the game uniquely difficult to obtain?

I'm not including the Egg-a-pult...

There is the egg xbow in the farm craft station.

Other than that you have to purchase them in the elven city for mana orbs.

You can also purchase them in Sun Haven. They contain different stats/perks depending on where they are bought.
