I don't know of a repository of SE3 mods, so if you have a list you're trying to choose between please let me know!
I've been tinkering with making armor useful, myself. The main trick there is getting 0kt components that won't make the AI infinite loop on ship design.
Then running out a list of armor improvements to make them cheaper with construction tech levels so you can afford more of them per ship to increase hitpoints.
(Probably also a good idea to nerf all the weapons and shields by, say, 4x. That way armor and internals (and shield regenerators) have more health in a relative sense.)
Having a flagship that takes 1/4th the damage because there are three padding plates between every useful component is fun, but that thing is a serious repair dock queen and only sorties when things are serious. ;)
I'm also sure that I managed to swing a 0kt armor layer component back in the early 2000s, by doing something creative with ECM ability so the AI would only install one instead of infinite numbers. Having 100 tiles in the armor layer for a leaky shield effect was glorious, but I lost it on an old PC and haven't been able to recreate that magic since. :(
Well, I am thinking about the tech mods that come with the game. Some of them add new technologies and I was curious about which of them is the best.
